Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Ten or more years in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gifts, with development experience at an academic institution or an equivalent amount of sales experience
  • Experience in supervising a team of development or sales professionals
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of potential donors and donors in order to develop relationships between them and colleges or areas
  • Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting Appalachian’s fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with faculty, senior leaders, trustees, alumni, volunteers, and the advancement office team
  • Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments
  • Frequent travel is necessary for this position, requiring flexibility in work hours to include evenings and weekends as needed to accomplish objectives and satisfy goals

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Director of Development will be responsible for all fundraising to support programs in the Walker College of Business and will serve on the leadership team in University Advancement. The Walker College of Business houses six departments, five academic centers, three graduate programs, and 10 undergraduate majors. The Walker College of Business is consistently named a Best Business School by The Princeton Review, placing emphasis on international experiences, sustainable business practices, entrepreneurial programs, and real-world applications with industry. The Walker College has the highest full-time undergraduate enrollment of any business school in the UNC System.

  • Manage a portfolio of major ($25,000) and principal ($100,000) donors for the Walker College of Business and the University.
  • Lead, supervise, and train a team of up to five development officers who represent different areas of the University while managing her/his principal gift portfolio of high-level prospects.
  • Serve as a resource consultant for a team of development officers to develop strategies and solicitations for major gifts with an emphasis on collaboration, teamwork, and open communication.
  • Understand current funding needs of the university and potential funding opportunities of the areas of the university through interface with administrators, deans, development officers, and department heads.
  • Prepare briefing materials, proposal ideas and solicitation strategies for fundraising calls, and provide guidance for the development of promotional brochures and written material in support of specific fundraising activities.
  • Assist the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Development by promoting sound fundraising practices using metrics for accountability measurements.
  • Responsible for building and managing a major gifts program to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of major gifts prospects. A focus on pipeline development to meet increasingly aggressive annual fundraising goals is necessary.
  • Work with the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement in developing major prospects and leadership gifts.
  • Work with the Office of Prospect Management and Research to identify, cultivate and solicit major gifts prospects that are capable of contributing $100,000+ to the University; recommend and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for individual prospects; work collaboratively with administration, volunteers, advisory board members, and other advancement staff as appropriate.
  • Identify and interact with potential donors.
  • As appropriate, refer donors and potential donors to other development staff members.
  • Monthly contact reports, moves and prospect management activities must be recorded.
