Chairperson – Department of Kinesiology, Nutrition and Recreation

Primary Responsibilities

  • Fulfill department administrative duties on a 12-month contract, with reassigned time as appropriate to be approved by the Provost (Typically 6 credit hours of instruction per semester, or equivalent)
  • Provide academic planning (i.e. scheduling) for all departmental programs
  • Provide collegial leadership for faculty on the main campus and regional campuses
  • Provide oversight of budget, facilities, and equipment
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty and staff.
  • Oversee student recruitment and retention efforts
  • Supervise administrative staff
  • Advocate for the resource needs of the programs, faculty and staff, and students
  • Oversee undergraduate and graduate programs (including traditional and online programs)
  • Fulfill all other duties as assigned by University administration


Required Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in a departmentally related discipline from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited or government-certified university
  • A strong record of teaching, scholarship, and service that merit appointment as a tenured Associate Professor within a departmental discipline, Full Professor preferred
  • Evidence of successful administrative and leadership experience in an academic institution, including budgetary and scheduling experience
  • Familiarity and experience with relevant accreditations and/or governing bodies pertinent to the department
  • Demonstrated ability to advocate for disciplines within the department
  • Experience developing and/or revising academic programs and curriculum
  • Demonstrated record of scholarship including peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and/or successful grant writing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of faculty morale and enthusiasm
  • Strong interpersonal/written/oral communication, and cultural competence
  • Demonstrated commitment of collaboration and partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse working environment including working with multicultural populations and an understanding of and sensitivity to issues affecting women and minorities

Departmental Information: The Department of Kinesiology, Nutrition and Recreation is in the College of Education, Health and Human Studies and has 21 full-time faculty members serving approximately 500 students. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Athletic Training, Dietetics, Health Management: (Exercise Science & Health Promotion options), Health Sciences, Nutrition and Wellness, Nutritional Science, Physical Education K-12, Recreation and Park Administration and Sport Management. Additionally, the Department offers graduate degrees in Sport Management, Nutrition and Exercise Science, and a Dietetic Internship and is seeking to add a Master of Science in Applied Nutrition and a Master of Science in Athletic Training. The department offers nationally accredited programs in Athletic Training (CAATE), Dietetics (ACEND), Physical Education (CAEP/NAPSE), Recreation and Park Administration (COARP), and Sports Management (COSMA).
