Metropolitan State University, Minnesota’s public, urban university, is seeking to hire a Social Work Faculty. This is a full-time, probationary, tenure track appointment faculty position within the Social Work department and is expected to start August 16, 2021.

The University recently completed a strategic plan (FY 20 – FY 24) with a theme of “Building a Resilient, Student Ready University.” College of Community Studies and Public Affairs, within which the Department of Social Work is situated, is committed to providing students with high quality education through building strong partnerships with communities in Minneapolis-St Paul. Our program is the only Bachelor in Social Work program (BSW) in the Midwest which main focus is to prepare social workers to serve communities of colors and Native American Communities. The program provides a high-quality education with educators that maintain engage with their community and have several years of practice. They bring their practice experience to the classroom to help students understand generalist social work concepts. Helping students to achieve their goal is the program’s dedication, about 85% of our students graduate on time with a BSW degree. This program has develop a strong relationship with several community agencies and in this time of COVID-19 pandemic continues to strength and maintain those relationships.

Metropolitan State University has responded to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic by offering nearly all of its courses in a fully online format for the 2020-2021 academic year, limiting any in-person instruction to courses for which in-person learning is essential for students to achieve the learning outcomes. In addition, the majority of employees are working remotely, taking advantage of technological tools to engage students and complete their work.  The search for this position will be conducted using web conferencing technology.

The Department: The mission of the Social Work program is to integrate the values, knowledge and skills inherent to social work into an academic program that will enable multi-culturally competent bachelor's level students to engage in generalist social work practices that will meet the needs of the increasingly diverse Twin Cities communities.

Responsibilities:

Faculty members are expected to:

  • Demonstrate ability to teach the core social work curriculum in areas such as social welfare history and policy, social research, human behavior in the social environment, generalist social work practice and comparative racial/ethnic analysis at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Engage in scholarly research or creative achievement.
  • Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.
  • Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance and engage in service to the university and community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving a culturally diverse student body through delivering a student-centered education in a liberal arts and sciences context and possess the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals.
  • Participate in departments, college, faculty and university committees and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Social Work or related field; D, DSW, Ph.D.
  • Master’s degree in Social Work.
  • Five years of post-M.S.W., social work practice experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding on culturally relevant, equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist pedagogies.
  • Experience in supervision of social work practice and/or field instruction.
  • Expertise and social work practice experience with Native Americans/Indiginous Communities.
  • Significant experience serving a culturally, ethnically diverse community.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain an active reseach agenda.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • S.W. field instruction experience.
  • Doctorate in Social Work.
  • Effective and culturally competent communication skills (written & verbal).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally, economically and linguistically diverse student body and workforce.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement.

*Employment for this position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement for the Inter Faculty Organization.
