Pratt Institute's Human Resources department is seeking a Director of Benefits to join the HR/Benefits team. The Director of Benefits serves as primary Institute benefits representative, manages benefits administration, ensures legal and regulatory compliance, participates in strategic planning of benefits programs, and supervises a Benefits Coordinator and Employee Leave Administrator.

Position Duties:
  • Manage administration of benefit programs for all Institute employees, including health and welfare, worker's compensation, disability protection, and other related benefits.
  • Ensure benefit plans' compliance with relevant laws and regulations (i.e., HIPAA, COBRA, ERISA, ADA, IRS regulations, etc.) and update summary plan descriptions, plan documents, benefits forms, and policies as necessitated by law and ease of administration.
  • Review and ensure accurate reporting and payment of premiums, claims, and all other benefit-related expenses, as well as employee contributions, COBRA payments, etc., and audit budget report of benefits expenditures.
  • Function as Institute's main point of contact regarding employee benefits. Communicate benefits updates and other related information to faculty and staff, answer employee benefit inquiries, resolve claims, and intercede with vendors and broker(s) as necessary.
  • Manage annual benefit renewals with broker and provider representatives, and in strategic planning for benefit programs, including consideration of new programs, alternate providers, plan design modifications, etc.
  • Manage and conduct annual open enrollment for all benefit programs, communicate benefit options and obligations to employees, and coordinate on-campus benefits programs.
  • Oversee benefits orientation of new employees, benefit enrollments, changes, and additions, and related payroll deductions.
  • Serve as a voting member of the NYC & URMG Trust related to Worker's Compensation and as chief liaison with related representatives (i.e. Marsh) re: management of claims, preventative efforts to improve safety and reduce claims, and completion of necessary reports.
  • Foster a culture of customer service within the benefits function; continuously review and modify benefits services as necessary; develop communication program for employee benefits, through in-person presentations, social media, and other appropriate means; and participate in planning of employee recognition efforts and events.
  • Develop and revise written policies and procedures (as needed) related to employee benefits administration.
  • Participate in and support other (i.e. non-benefits) HR and Pratt initiatives as necessary and appropriate.
  • Serve on institutional level committees as needed to represent Human Resources.
  • Oversee and/or manage investigations and verifications of worker's compensation and disability claims.
  • Provide disability accommodations for Faculty and Staff as necessary to ensure Section 504 compliance.
  • Supervise Benefits Coordinator and Employee Leave Administrator to ensure quality and integrity of routine benefits administration.
  • Serve on Retirement Planning Committee.
  • Primarily responsible for performance of the administrative functions related to the institution's 403(b) retirement plan including providing data in support of the annual plan audit.
  • Manage health and wellness programs.
  • Manage retiree medical benefits and coordination of benefits with Medicare.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.




Qualifications
Education: BA/BS degree required. Master’s degree and/or CEBS, SHRM or HRCI certifications preferred.

Experience: At least five years’ relevant experience, including four years’ experience in supervisory/management role. Higher education experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Must have superior knowledge of labor and employment law, particularly employee benefit laws and regulations; and experience using MS Office, benefit management software.
  • Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively and work with a wide variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Other:
  • Proven experience required with oral and written communications, presentations, customer service, organizational and prioritization skills required.
