International Student and Scholar Affairs (ISSA), part of Notre Dame International, offers a variety of support services and programs to help international students and scholars successfully manage their immigration status and make the most out of their time at the University.

The Assistant Director serves the University and international students through ISSA's work of welcome, advising, reporting, promoting, and advocacy, particularly ensuring our students, scholars and dependents have the resources to maintain lawful F and J immigration status by advising on immigration regulations, policies and procedures. This position is responsible for administration within the Sunapsis database system, ensuring data integrity and compliance with U.S. government requirements; leads process and system improvements, and engages departments on processes and issues pertaining to international students. This position also collaborates with colleagues to support the well-being of our international student community. This position requires a thorough knowledge of F-1 and J-1 visa requirements and a willingness to build relationships that engage the international student community in the life of the University.

Responsibilities include:

F and J Immigration Advising (50%) - As a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), manage day to day advising on immigration regulations, policies, and procedures for F and J visa holding students. This position develops and implements policies and procedures which support students and their dependents in maintaining lawful immigration status, and it also serves as a primary contact for student immigration issues with campus partners and federal immigration agencies (SEVP, USCIS, ICE, CBP). This role also provides backup for J-1 scholar advising.

Programming / Orientation (20%) - Collaborate with colleagues in facilitating new student orientation, extended orientation programming, and managing student welcome team.

Campus Engagement / Student Advocacy (20%) - In support of engaging international students and supporting their well-being, collaborate with campus partners to meet the needs of international students and promote their contributions to the community.

System Management (10%) - Manage data within Sunapsis system to ensure integrity of data and timely reporting to U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which includes eform development, template management, data audits, and process improvement.
Stay up to date on industry standards to recommend and implement best practices in immigration advising, information system management, student support, and communications.


Minimum Qualifications:
—3+ years experience advising F-1 and J-1 visa holders and maintaining SEVIS records required
—Experience with Sunapsis, Banner and Slate preferred
—Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively
—Demonstrated ability to work with individuals across varied backgrounds and across the organization at multiple levels, including students, staff, and faculty
—Strong cross cultural communication skills
—Experience working in cross cultural or internationally minded environment
—Strong attention to detail and appreciation for problem solving
—Commitment to developing cross cultural communication skills
—Strong oral and written communication skills

Must be a US citizen or permanent resident to gain designation by the Department of Homeland Security as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)


Preferred Qualifications:
—Experience recommending and implementing best practices.
—Experience creating communication plans and resources
—Experience working/living internationally
