The School of Architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, an internationally recognized professional school offering B. Arch, M. Arch, and M.S. degrees, seeks a dynamic and visionary leader with outstanding communication, listening, and organizational skills who will build upon the strengths of the existing programs to serve as Chairperson for the Undergraduate Architecture Department.

The Undergraduate Architecture Program is currently ranked 7th in the U.S. Design Intelligence Survey and is the largest of four departments within the School of Architecture. Under the leadership of a new dean, the school is expanding its international profile, increasing its research outputs and status, expanding interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary exchange across both the departments and the institute, developing a portfolio of professional courses, and growing its reputation as a school committed to educating graduates to lead lives of consequence in a range of regional contexts both within and beyond the profession.

The School's Strategic Plan places particular emphasis on architecture's role in relation to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion and in the development of a climate crisis responsive curriculum. The Chairperson will, therefore, be responsible for the overall management and future direction of the department's academic programs, in accordance with Pratt's mission and in support of the institution's strategic plan and the school's vision statement. The Chairperson will assume academic and administrative leadership of the department and will develop programs to complement, enhance, and build upon the prestige and reputation of our Undergraduate program.

Located on Pratt's historic 25-acre campus in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, Pratt is an internationally recognized school of architecture, art, design, information and liberal arts and sciences which draws students from diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds. Department Chairs provide an important role as both administrators and educational leaders at Pratt Institute. The responsibilities of the department chair may include but are not limited to:

  • Providing academic leadership for the department in accordance with the strategic goals of the Institute;

  • Expanding, developing, and leading an inclusive, diverse, and equitable architectural curriculum and pedagogy for the Undergraduate Architecture Program;

  • Holding regularly scheduled faculty meetings that allow for faculty input in departmental decisions; this includes adequate communication of issues and forums for the discussion of issues;

  • Managing and addressing student concerns regarding departmental issues in accordance with Institute policies and procedures;

  • Recruiting, supervising, evaluating, and supporting the department's faculty members and their academic advancement and reviewing and submitting recommendations on all faculty personnel actions;

  • Assigning faculty teaching loads, courses, and schedules in accordance with Institute policies and agreements and in consultation with faculty and managing the department budget;

  • Demonstrating collaborative, fair and transparent leadership, ensuring that processes are effectively communicated to all members of the department - independent of rank or status - and that they feel equally valued as members of the school community;

  • Advancing an established body of scholarship and research/scholarly outputs and/or teaching (optionally) one course per semester in the department curriculum;

  • Developing a recruitment strategy and assisting admissions with recruitment of students;

  • Establishing links to professional and community organizations and leading practitioners in the field;

  • Administering the department's budget and serving on School and Institute committees;

  • Overseeing the accreditation of the department with NAAB, MSCHE, and RIBA;
  • ?Providing an expert, collaborative, and creative, and forward-thinking environment for teaching, design, and research;



Applicants should have a graduate degree in architecture, administrative experience, preferably in higher education; at least five (5) years' college-level teaching experience; demonstrated leadership ability; and recognized standing in the discipline and the field in either academe or professional practice.


A doctorate, and/or research publications track record is strongly preferred.

Expertise in subject areas pertaining to the school's commitment to the curricula themes of social justice and climate crisis responsive education. A history of receiving awards in the field, including funding and grants, and experience supervising thesis students.

SALARY is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
