Visiting Assistant Professor of Pre-Modern Global History

The History Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Pre-Modern Global History (before 1700). This is a full-time, one-year position beginning July 1, 2021.

The teaching load for the year will be six classes (typically three classes per semester, though there may be an opportunity to contribute a class during the January short term).  Teaching responsibilities will include a variety of courses at the introductory and advanced levels.  Additionally, candidates will be expected to help with the supervision of senior theses in their area of specialization.  Field of specialization is open, but applications are encouraged from scholars with expertise in the history of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and/or the Mediterranean world, broadly defined.  The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the ability to emphasize comparative, cross-regional, and/or transnational perspectives in their teaching.  Desired subfields include the history of science, the history of medicine, the history of religion, and environmental history.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in history in hand by July 1, 2021 and a strong record of teaching at the undergraduate level.  Applicants must also demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution.  Applications are sought from those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations, and share Hollins’ commitment to preparing students for leadership opportunities in a broadly diverse, global society.  Final candidates will be subject to a criminal history background check.
