General Summary:

Under the direction of the Provost, the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) functions as an experienced scholar and strategic thinker empowered by mission and planning to lead diversity driven change in university policy, pedagogy and practice. Deeply committed to equity, the CDO works with stakeholders to foster an inclusive campus with a robust culture of belonging. A strong candidate for the position demonstrates the ability to engage difficult conversations across constituencies - from students to the board, with wisdom, empathy and confidence.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a comprehensive and representative Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Alignment Committee to enhance elements of DEI within each college and division and advance a campus climate in which students, faculty, administrators, and staff are welcomed, respected, valued, and supported;
  • Engage the campus and broader community in ongoing conversations regarding equity, inclusion, and diversity related issues;
  • Develop, collect, and analyze metrics of success for SUU's Diversity Initiatives; communicate consistent updates with our campus and community;
  • Develop, source, and institute ongoing diversity training for new and current employees;
  • Develop and implement community outreach strategies that focus on building positive relationships between the community and underrepresented populations;
  • Work with the Marketing and Communication office to develop materials to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and successes;
  • Work to engage community partners to support and understand the experience of diverse students and respond appropriately to diversity-related incidents;
  • Partner with faculty in curriculum development efforts and identification of Equity Gaps in academic performance to facilitate inclusive teaching and learning practices;
  • Collaborate with Enrollment Management and Student Affairs to implement strategic planning initiatives to recruit, admit, retain, graduate and support students of diverse backgrounds;
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to identify recruitment sources to provide a diverse hiring pool of applicants, including providing training to search committees and providing consultation during hiring.
  • Partner with Human Resources, Title IX, and Disability Services on issues related to DEI.
  • Commit to and engage in personal professional development in the field of DEI;
  • Work closely with Grant's office.

Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in educational leadership, post-secondary education, sociology, social anthropology, public administration, human resource management or a field related to DEI, required; Doctoral Degree preferred.
  • Institutional leadership experience; 2+ years.
  • DEI related experience (required)
  • Intensive Experience working in EEO, Title IX, Affirmative Action, teaching, and research in the field (preferred).
  • Demonstrated success in navigating complex issues of diversity and inclusion with university administrators, faculty, staff, students, and community members of the unique cultures often associated with smaller, regional campuses in a rural setting.
  • Strong diplomatic communication skills related to cultural competency, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
  • Proven ability of collecting, identifying, analyzing, and using data for achieving institutional inclusive excellence.
  • Proven ability to maintain a professional demeanor during emotionally charged, difficult, or high-pressure situations.
  • Proven inclusive leadership ability with established interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding and successful experience utilizing the Inclusive Workplace Model.
  • Exhibits and exercises a deliberate passion for diversity, equity, inclusion as they pertain to access issues in the context of higher education.
