Assistant Dean for Student Success is responsible for enhancing the academic education of our students through the development and oversight of programs and activities that promote student success. The Assistant Dean is responsible for strategically identifying, coordinating, and developing programs and innovative ways to increase student success, specifically of majors within the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM).

This position supports the Dean in both day-to-day functions and the broader visioning for student recruitment, retention, and overall success. The Assistant Dean plays an integral role in the academic and professional development of students’ assets through a variety of high-impact experiences. In order to be successful, the Assistant Dean will work collaboratively within the structure of CSM, Colleges and University.

Essential Functions

  • In partnership with the Dean and unit leaders, provide leadership, management and support to the departments and units. This includes, but is not limited to existing programs such as Learning Assistants, Science Olympiad, and Student Ambassadors, and new initiatives such as STEAM, Peer Advising, as well as internship and mentorship programs.
  • Provide leadership for undergraduate recruitment, advising, retention and career preparation.
  • Serve as a member of the CSM community and contribute to the broader institutional goals of increasing student success by identification, development, and implementation of high-impact activities. Identify and promote opportunities for on- and off-campus student employment, research, leadership, and internships with state and regional businesses.
  • Provide vision and leadership for college-wide programming, community building and leadership development that engages large numbers of students and incorporates best practices in student activities thereby increasing student satisfaction, retention and sense of belonging.
  • Serve as a primary resource for faculty, staff and students on student engagement and leadership opportunities as well as on CSM and NDSU policies and procedures.

 

Focus on Student Success

  • Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive plan for student engagement that is consistent with the strategic plans of CSM and NDSU and serves the needs of the undergraduate and graduate student population.
  • Provide day-to-day management for a range of activities and programs that support transformative educational experiences and promote student recruitment, retention and graduation.
  • Recognize changes in student needs by developing programs and services that address these changes, improve the student experience on campus and support student success.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies in support of enhancing retention and graduation rates of current students and recruitment of students to CSM.
  • Exhibit leadership in strengthening traditions and developing new experiences that contribute to students’ pride in CSM and NDSU.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in various committees, professional trainings, industry conferences, and conventions.
  • Exhibit fluency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn and utilize institutional software.
  • Comply with State and University policies.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in compliance with applicable laws and in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and bylaws.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Education or PhD in a related field with expertise in student development, higher education, or related field.  A record of successfully engaging large numbers of students in an academic setting and promoting student success.
  • Experience and ability to plan strategically, develop innovative programs, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, develop and manage resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify the barriers and disadvantages faced by incoming students and to relate effectively to personnel on campus and local secondary schools.
  • Excellent emotional intelligence and communication (verbal, written, listening) skills.
  • Understanding of mission of land-grant universities.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professional involvement in NASPA, ACPA, regional student affairs organizations, or similar professional organizations.
  • Experience in advising college/university students, facilitating workshops, and training staff, students and faculty.
  • Experience in working with students, parents, administrators and faculty.
  • Experience with TRIO or similar programs and in working with youth from diverse backgrounds.
