Digital Content Specialist
The Virginia Tech New Media team seeks a digital content specialist to help guide social media content strategy through data analysis in the dynamic environment of online communications platforms.
The New Media team plays a key role in university communications to build and support Virginia Tech’s online reputation. A successful candidate will bring strong communications skills, can demonstrate good professional judgment, stays abreast of emerging technologies and industry best practices, enterprises innovative ideas, and can work within university brand guidelines.
This person is primarily responsible for social media data analysis and reporting across multiple digital platforms on behalf of Virginia Tech. Additionally, this position will assist in keeping the New Media team’s website content relevant and up-to-date with the most current best practices and resources. They will also serve alongside the university social media manager in roles such as comment moderation, monitoring, and occasional content creation, to create depth on the New Media team.
The digital content specialist should have demonstrated skills in marketing data collection and analysis, summarizing information in reports for multiple audiences, and using charts and graphs to visualize the data. This person should be comfortable communicating analysis results to the members of the New Media team and other partners across campus. This person needs to collaborate well with others and should also be able to work well independently.

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, statistics, or another related field
Strong communications skills
Experience collecting and analyzing data
Experience using tools such as Excel or Google Sheets
Demonstrated understanding of audience-platform relationships and how that can affect messaging
Ability to maintain a level of confidentiality with sensitive situations
Ability to work within branding guidelines
Ability to work both in a team setting and independently
Ability to respond in a customer-service-type role to messages and inquiries in a timely manner
Prior experience in social media management or marketing data analysis with demonstrated achievements and progressive responsibilities
Familiarity with website content management systems, such as Adobe Experience Manager
Experience using social media management tools and apps like Falcon, Sprout Social, Buffer, Canva, etc., or similar
Crisis communications experience
Capability of working at university-related events that may require physical stamina, including standing for extended periods of time as necessary
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools
Graphic design skills
Photography and/or videography skills
Commensurate with Experience
