Job Summary

Johnson County Community College, a League of Innovation school, is searching for a full-time, Assistant Professor for their acclaimed Theatre program. This well-established, nationally recognized program in the Kansas City metro area prepares students to enter the theatre industry directly or transfer courses to a four-year school. We are ideally seeking a designer/educator who can bring exceptional visual and critical abilities, strong fundamentals, innovative methodologies and integration of new technologies to complement the current strengths of the theatre program. The theatre program is a discipline in the Department of Music, Theatre and Recording Arts and is housed in the state of the art Carlsen Center at JCCC.

The Assistant Professor, Theatre position requires a faculty team member whose role is to instruct, at all levels of the curriculum, courses for students seeking an AA in Liberal Arts or an AFA degree with an emphasis in Theatre. This position requires an individual who embraces the vision and mission of our program, contemporary design practice and pedagogy, innovation, collegiality and collaboration. The position requires an energetic, creative, self-motivated person who has demonstrated proven teaching, leadership, design and communication skills.

Teach the equivalent of 15 credit hours per semester in Theatre. Perform other duties expected of full-time faculty, including maintaining scheduled office hours; developing and revising curriculum; training faculty in new curriculum as needed; developing and implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes; developing and maintaining relationships with industry and academic partners; participating in college, division, and department meetings; serving on committees; and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments could be any combination of face-to-face (day or evening), hybrid or online, and are subject to change as needed.

Teaching:
• Teach a majority of theater design courses (minimum two per semester and primarily in costumes, makeup and scenery)
• Mentor student theatre majors.

Non-Teaching:
• Maintain strong recruitment for program.
• Design elements for four to six productions during the academic year.
• Oversight, supervision and maintenance of departmental costume shop and storage facilities.
• Participate in the planning and administration of all departmental functions.

Required Qualifications

-Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre
-2+ years of experience as a theatre designer / costume
-Strong teaching potential and/or ability
-Design abilities in costumes, makeup and scenery
-Strong understanding of the changing landscape of higher education
-Comfortable adopting and using new technologies
-Ability to collaborate with faculty and students within and outside the discipline
-Knowledge of online learning systems.
-Strong communication skills
-Must possess a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record

Preferred Qualifications

-College teaching experience
-Two years documented successful teaching at the college level
-Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the teaching mission of a comprehensive community college
-Basic knowledge of computer aided drawing and design software
