Department Summary

The Science Education Program and the Department of Computer Science at San José State University invite applications for an assistant professor, tenure-track position in any field of computer science education that complements an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the Science Education Program who are active in chemistry education research, physics education research, and the learning sciences.

They would also complement the Department of Computer Science, consisting of outstanding scholars active in research areas such as data science, machine learning, computer security, bioinformatics, and distributed computing. The Department of Computer Science strives to provide the highest quality education in Computer Science at the undergraduate and master levels, preparing them for the competitive computer industry and for Ph.D. studies. Degrees include: BS in Computer Science, BS in Software Engineering, MS in Computer Science, MS in Data Science, and MS in Bioinformatics.

The Science Education Program consists of a team of dedicated teacher-scholars recognized for their commitment to: 1) the preparation and ongoing support of justice-centered, socially responsive secondary science teachers, 2) the transformation of undergraduate science courses and student learning experiences, and 3) engaging in innovative science education research uniting the College of Science with the Lurie College of Education. An MA degree in Science Education is offered.

Required Qualifications


A Ph.D. in a computer science area with a focus in education research or a Ph.D. in science education or learning sciences with a focus in a computer science discipline or equivalent doctoral work is required. For non-computer science Ph.D. candidates, an MS/MA in a computer science or related area is required. Applicants must demonstrate the potential for meaningful engagement of undergraduate and masters students in their proposed research.

Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Responsibilities


Excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level is expected. Applicants should be familiar with a variety of research-based teaching techniques and have interest in implementing student-centered practices in courses of different sizes and levels. Research in computer science education is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate is able to teach teaching methods courses and computer science courses in the credentialing program for teacher candidates, graduate courses in science education, and introductory and upper- division computer science courses. The successful candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committee and other service assignments. The candidate is expected to successfully obtain external grant funding for their research program. The successful candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
