Summary/Objective

Incumbent functions as a Career Advisor in the Office of Career Development in the School of International Service (SIS) and will be responsible for supporting the career development of SIS students, with a focus on graduate and online student populations. Provides in-depth, customized career coaching/advising/counseling and facilitating opportunities for self-reflection, career exploration, career planning, professional polish, experiential learning, and post-graduate pursuit.

Essential Functions

1. 70% of Time CAREER ADVISING

  • Collaborate with SIS students, with a focus on the graduate and online student populations, in identifying needs and reasons for seeking services.
  • Identify and understand students’ personal characteristics and life experiences related to career development. Identify and understand students’ career decision-making processes.
  • Develop action plans in support of student employability skills. Identify and construct student-learning outcomes.
  • Identify, select, and implement career coaching/advising/counseling interventions and techniques appropriate to student goals.
  • Identify and use selected assessments, such as career thoughts, decision-making, interests, aptitude/skills, values, and personality traits, to measure student qualities.
  • Deliver career coaching/advising/counseling services through a range of approaches, including individual, drop-in, and group appointments, workshops, and other programs.
  • Keep abreast of current sources and use of career development practices and employment information in providing students with career coaching/advising/counseling services.
  • Record interactions and outcomes of students.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of coaching/advising/counseling through student satisfaction surveys.

 

2. 15% of Time PROGRAM & EVENT ADMINISTRATION

  • Establish and measure effective student learning outcomes for programs and events.
  • Provide assistance in the development, planning, and implementation of programs and events.
  • Develop a marketing strategy for each program and disseminate the information using all appropriate channels in alignment with the institutional brand.
  • Deliver presentations to diverse constituencies. Modify existing presentations and materials.
  • Design, administer, and compile results of needs assessments and benchmarking. Gather and compile data for evaluation of programming.

3. 10% of Time INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

  • Collect data and present basic data on employment and compensation trends.
  • Identify, review, and evaluate common career planning systems and information resources.
  • Assist with collection and analysis of post-graduation outcomes.
  • Serve as a liaison to academic and nonacademic departments and organizations on campus (e.g., SIS Graduate Academic Advising, IR Online, SIS Office of International Program, AU Career Center, Office of Merit Awards, AU International Student and Scholar Services, AU Veterans Affairs, and Kogod Center for Career Development) and maintaining close ties to faculty and staff.

4. 5% of Time OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

  • Assists the Director of Career Education &Employer Relations and team members in the Office of Career Development with special projects to enhance career advising, programs, events, and resources and to further career development for SIS students.
  • Represents SIS and Office of Career Development at university, employer, and community partner events, as needed.
Work Environment
  • This position reports directly to the Director, Career Education & Employer Relations

  • This position works in close collaboration with other career advisors in the SIS Office of Career Development

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of progressively responsible work in career development, student affairs, employer relations, international affairs, or other relevant field

  • Experience coaching/advising/counseling students on career development

  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement projects involving multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced, diverse environment

  • Extremely well-organized with strong attention to detail and excellent follow-through

  • Ability to set and follow timelines for programs and events

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and to establish rapport and relate well to a diverse population of colleagues and constituents

  • Service-oriented approach and polished professional demeanor

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Ability to identify where a person is in the career development process and provide appropriate strategies to facilitate progress toward goals

  • Understanding of the basics of student development theory, learning styles, and strategies for instruction

  • Experience addressing the developmental needs of diverse populations

  • Knowledge of current employment trends in the public, private, and non-profit sectors

  • Certification in coaching/advising/counseling

  • Certification in MBTI, Strong, or other relevant career assessment tool(s)

  • Previous experience in international affairs
