The Department of Pediatrics, Acute Cardiac Unit seeks aNurse Practitioner.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Conducts comprehensive and/or episodic health assessments. Records and documents assessment necessary to maintain, coordinate, and/or expedite required services. This will include:

  • Perform history and physical exams, discriminating between normal and abnormal findings;
  • Identify differential diagnosis.
  • Establishes a Plan of Care including:

  • Order appropriate lab, radiographic and other studies.
  • Appropriately interpret results of lab, radiographic and other studies.
  • Performs tests and procedures as indicated within scope of practice.
  • Establish a plan of care related to patient’s identified problems, including medication and therapeutic procedures.
  • Consult with other team members regarding proposed treatment guidelines as necessary.
  • Implements Plan of Care in safe and effective manner. This will include:

      Prescribe and regulate medications and performs other related procedures within the Maryland Board of Nursing scope of practice for the Nurse Practitioner. Record patient visit/interaction in concise clear logical and timely manner. Arrange referrals to appropriate specialties when needed. Triage patient telephone calls, messages, and interactions appropriately. Tracks patient compliance with treatment plan.

    Organizes workload to meet patient and organizational needs including:

      Utilize time management to see patients in an efficient manner as identified by departmental goals. Maintain consistent level of productivity. Identifies problems that impede overall functioning and initiates appropriate interventions. Work collaboratively with the health team members to facilitate smooth operations of the unit.

    Communicates with healthcare team members to assure patient and organizational needs are met. This will include:

      Supervise activities of team members as appropriate. Identify areas of weakness in operational systems and makes recommendations for improvements. Communicate significant information in an organized, logical, and concise manner to co-workers. Provide constructive feedback as it relates to performance in an appropriate manner. Adheres to the confidentiality policy as outlined in the interdisciplinary Clinical Practice Manual.

    Analyzes research findings and current trends in the area of specialty and applies the information, as appropriate, to improve the management of patient care.

    Participates in the development of the interdisciplinary team.

      Supports the orientation of newly hired nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner students. Supports the education of the interdisciplinary team.
    Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to assure organizational goals are met.

      Supports quality and safety initiatives. Supports the institutions Core Values.

    Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

    Responsible for:

      Participating in daily rounds with the inpatient pediatric cardiology attending/team. Writing daily notes, procedure notes and other documentation. Writing orders, ordering appropriate labs, tests, and consult requests for pediatric cardiac patients. Removing chest tubes, temporary pacemaker wires, and central lines after consultation with the cardiac surgery team. Coordinating consultations with other teams including SLP/speech therapy, GPS, GI/nutrition, Genetics, Pain Service and other services as needed. Writing home care orders, comprehensive discharge summaries, and scheduling follow up appointments. Completing pharmacy prior authorization forms for specialty medications. Following long term patients (medically complex) in the outpatient clinic. Attend cardiac surgery management conference. Participate in nursing education activities.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Acute Care. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

    JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

    Preferred Qualifications:3-5 years Pediatric NP experience preferred. Will consider new PNP with previous bedside cardiac care experience. Pediatric critical care experience preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

    Working Conditions:

    Four (4) 10 hr shifts per week – 7am-5pm andEvery 3rd weekend

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
