The Department of Pediatric Immunology is seeking aNurse Practitioner/Study Coordinator. The Advanced Practitioner will be responsible for the oversight of the administrative and scientific implementation of complex clinical research studies. This individual provides comprehensive and age appropriate care for children with allergic diseases, including food allergy, asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis. Will work with allergists and other members of the health care team in the care of patients from infancy through adolescence. This will include evaluations of subjects in research protocols, oversight of oral food challenges and research medication administration.

The Nurse Practitioner practices within the guidelines of the unit, department, and institution.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

This position requires utilizing a thorough knowledge of concepts and theories in research studies and associated protocols for the design, implementation, oversight and analysis of clinical trials. Collaboration within Johns Hopkins including faculty, Pediatric Clinical Research Unit (PCRU), IRB, and various other internal staff members as well as with outside entities including NIH, Contract Research Organizations and FDA on the development, implementation, and management and monitoring of various research studies.

  • Provide advanced nursing care directly to patients/families enrolled in ongoing research studies on food allergy, specifically novel and potentially high risk studies on novel treatments children with severe food allergy. Duties includes providing comprehensive physical exams, prescribing and regulating medications. Providing direct supervision during research visit-related skin testing, study medication administration and oral food challenge administration and performing other related procedures per Nurse Practitioner-Physician written agreement.
  • Carry out research coordinator responsibilities. Duties includes research subject recruitment and collection of data on food exposures and reactions, prior allergy evaluations, comorbid conditions, and current medications, and monitoring compliance and adverse events on subjects enrolled in research protocol.

  • Oversee the regulatory, administrative, and scientific implementation of multiple research studies including participation in protocol development, preparation of IRB original submissions, renewals and amendments, ICTR original application, in-service and renewals, and CRMS application and maintenance.

  • Communicate on a regular basis with the NIH and coordinating center for each of these studies.
  • Develop and implement plans to identify, recruit and retain research subjects.
  • Maintain study database/spreadsheet as well as organization and entry of research data in study database.
  • Complete case report forms and data collection tools to ensure accurate collection of pertinent data,
  • Coordinate study visits with the ICTR staff, Division staff, research subject and families.
  • Assist in data analysis, manuscript preparation and presentation of research findings at local and national meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
