The Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine is seeking candidates to be a Postdoctoral Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Weizhou Zhang. The main focus of Dr. Zhang laboratory is to understand tumor immune microenvironment of several human cancers including but not limited to breast cancer and renal cancers. Our ultimate goals are to identify novel molecular targets that have lineage-specific functions within solid tumor microenvironment. One field of specific research focus is to identify molecules that are critical for the survival/maintenance/suppressive functions of human cancer regulatory T cells, and that the same molecules are important for cancer progression. We will develop novel therapeutics to inhibit/degrade such important targets using different technologies. For example, we have two targets that can be inhibited by antibodies due to their secreted or membrane-bound nature; and we have one cytoplasmic and one nuclear protein that can be degraded by Proteolysis-targeting chimera (PROTAC), both of which are under patent filing and translational development. In collaboration with several laboratories with complimentary expertise, we have established techniques involving those in molecular biology, cancer biology, immunology and immunotherapy, medicinal chemistry and bioinformatics etc. for streamlining target discovery/validation, drug design/chemical synthesis (for example, using the advanced PROTAC technology), tumor model validation and immune landscaping, as well as preclinical assessment for efficacy etc. .

The candidate will benefit from a highly collaborative and diverse environment at the University of Florida by conduct independent and collaborative studies in a cancer and immunology lab focusing on both basic and translational studies; acquire additional experience in bioinformatics and cancer immunology. The successful candidate will be involved in exciting projects to understand human cancer Tregs and how to select target to inhibit these highly immune suppressive cell type. They will be encouraged to participate at scientific meetings and apply for training grants;

This position is 100% protected research activity including performing investigational studies utilizing animal models and patient specimens; reading research articles; writing papers/grants etc; learning required techniques.
  • Execute experiments independently and contribute to collaborative projects.
  • Train and supervise junior staff and undergraduate.
  • Participate rotating lab duties.
  • Analyze and present data at local and national meetings.
Applicant must be a Ph.D. in Immunology or Cancer Biology, or related fields with proven track record of productivity in form of publication in reputable journals. Hands-on-experience in laboratory research and good computer skills are required.

Will have solid experience working with lab animals and expertise in at least one of the following techniques:
    • Strong immunological background and run multi-parameter flow cytometry and analysis; the lab has a Aurora Cytek that can run up to 22 color-panel flow cytometry.
    • Mouse models of cancer or experience of other mouse models; it is required that the candidate is comfortable working with animals.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • experience with Cell signaling and molecular biology techniques, such as RT-PCR, Cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, Western Blotting, IP or co-IP, CRISPR based gene editing etc.
    • Familiarity with genomic or epigenomic analytical platforms such as RNA-sequencing, ChIP-sequencing also a plus.
    • Strong bioinformatics background or willing to learn bioinformatics is a plus, but not required.
