Job Summary

Receiving work direction from the Interim Medical Director (Physician), and reporting to the Associate Vice President of Health, Wellness, and Student Services, the Psychiatrist works independently in performing assigned student services and consultations with the Student Health Center (SHC) medical staff and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) counseling staff. Consultation could involve advice regarding psychiatric diagnostic treatment and psychotherapeutic activities and are in accordance with the overall operation of the SHC and within the scope of the program established by the Board of Trustees. The incumbent may provide highly specialized advice regarding planning, coordinating, and evaluating ongoing psychiatric care of students. All staff are expected to conform to CSU, State, and Federal regulations and laws. Although unlikely, there may be an occasion of brief evening or weekend work. Working collegially and collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all SHC positions. The Psychiatrist is expected to obtain a detailed intake assessment, as well as to order any appropriate laboratory tests to support diagnostic evaluations. The Psychiatrist may when appropriate, refer students, to other practitioners with the SJSU Health/Wellness Center. Chronic psychiatric illness may require referral to community resources for more extensive follow-up and treatment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic psychiatric disorders
  • See patients on an appointment and triage basis, receiving referrals from, and consulting with, SHC clinicians and Counseling Staff
  • Makes appropriate referrals for problems outside field of expertise and/or beyond the scope of the SHC and Counseling services
  • Electronically records, completes, and charts patient records daily
  • Counseling and instruction for patients concerning stress management and other modalities for prevention of psychiatric illness
  • Approaches and actions that help reduce RISK for SJSU; may also participate in Care Team efforts
  • Oversee the management of patients by SHC Psychiatric Nurse/Nurse Practitioner
  • In-service training, AAAHC Accreditation, and health education projects, relevant meetings
  • Studies, records, and reports in support of SHC quality control efforts
  • Presentations, training and seminars to support department effectiveness
  • Effective relationships with other SJSU staff and/or community professionals in order to foster strategic aims of the SHC and SJSU
  • Programs to streamline or increase effectiveness of comprehensive (mental) health services to students
  • Resources that create timely and efficient workflow (e.g., involving collaboration with Counseling and effective delivery of mental health services to students)
  • Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools, planned training, and performance initiatives. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow
  • Prepares progress reports, and informs supervisor of project status and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all operational functions
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
  • Thorough knowledge of current and advanced principles of general psychiatry, including knowledge of available community resources and how to use them.
  • Demonstrated skills in diagnostic clinical decision-making and critical thinking.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide accurate psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform patient care in functional areas to which assigned.
  • Working knowledge of ethics and standards of local and national medical associations and understanding local, state, and federal government regulations.
  • Working knowledge of software applicable to this position, such as medical record and scheduling software.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to communicate with both patients and SHC staff.
  • Ability to quickly assess emergency psychiatric situations and provide the necessary prompt course of action.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate an assigned, on-going clinical program.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive intake case histories.
  • Ability to work 3-4 days per week (24-32) hours.
  • Ability to observe, listen to, and work with a diverse multicultural population of students and staff in a university community.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU and SJSU policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment.
  • Excellent customer service and public relation skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.
  • Ability to participate on medical staff committees as required.
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties.
  • A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.
  • Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties.
  • A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with teenage and young adult health concerns and opportunities
  • 1 year practicing as psychiatrist
  • Organizational efforts to support community resilience and well-being


Compensation

Classification: Physician – Specialty Services
Anticipated Hiring Range: $20,000/month - $20,600/month
Hiring Range: $12,819/month - $24,950/month
