The IIT Institute of Design (ID) invites applications for a visiting open-rank faculty position at the intersection of computing, data and design. The position will contribute to ID’s exploration of the power of computation, sensing, and connectivity for building intelligent futures that are sustainable, equitable, and inclusive. Consideration of candidates will be ongoing with decisions as soon as suitable candidates are identified.

The Institute of Design, one of seven academic units within the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), is a graduate-only school of design offering degrees in Master of Design, a Ph.D. in Design, as well as a professional Master of Design Methods. Founded as the New Bauhaus in 1937, ID is a recognized international leader in the field of design, having charted new roles and applications for designers in response to changing technological, social, and economic environments. Successful candidates will join ID’s highly networked global community at the newly opened Kaplan Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship (the center for interdisciplinary innovation education at IIT). We invite all interested candidates to learn more about ID, its programs, and the exciting new initiatives at www.id.iit.edu.

Through this search, the ID is looking for junior to senior applicants with passion and experience in designing smart products, services, and systems using the power of data and computational modeling of human systems and phenomenon. We are looking for applications with a professional, academic, and/or hybrid backgrounds in design, computer science, HCI or engineering. The successful candidate will join a faculty engaged in design research and applied projects in fields such as strategic commercial design, socio-technical systems, urban systems, social innovation, sustainability, and healthcare. Preferred applicants will be working at the emerging intersections of technology and design. Like all faculty at ID, candidates for this position will embrace interdisciplinary work, both within and outside of the school, and for this position, with the newly created College of Computing at IIT (including a potential dual appointment).

The appointment carries full-time faculty responsibilities, including attending faculty meetings, advising students, and a commitment to outreach within and outside the university. In addition, selected candidates will also have the opportunity to work with IIT’s ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) Action Lab housed at ID. The Action Lab serves as a resource for corporate, civic, institutional, and philanthropic sponsorship to develop new sustainable value models to address the issues that shape our future. The appointment is a full-time, benefit-eligible position that may be visiting (one year) or continuing depending on needs and qualifications starting in August 2021.

ID offers an inclusive and collegial environment with a diverse academic, cultural, and practice-based community. ID faculty members teach and research along a spectrum of academic research and developing and codifying methods and tools. The faculty share knowledge in classrooms and through publications and well-established executive education programs, workshops, and ID’s own Design Intersections conference. The city of Chicago, with its high concentration of design professionals, academics, specialists, startups, and innovative organizations, is a platform for faculty research and consulting.

While a terminal degree in design, computer science, engineering, or other related tech application fields is preferred, comparable professional design-related experience will also be considered. ID is particularly interested in Human-Computer Interaction, Design+AI, Generative Design, Design of connected & embedded systems, and other high potential intersections of computing, data, and design. Rank and salary are open and will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Applications must include a letter describing areas of interest in teaching, practice, and research; a curriculum vitae; examples of work; examples of student work, when available; and three academic and/or professional references. All materials submitted must be PDF files or url links without a password. The review of applications will begin on January 4, 2021. The search will continue until the position is filled.

Please submit all application materials to idfacultysearch@id.iit.edu Candidates who have questions about the position are invited to send an email to the Dean of the Institute of Design, Denis Weil, at dweil@id.iit.edu.
