POSITION: The College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts of Wayne State University is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor in Interior Design in the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History. The job begins no later than August 18, 2021; salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will teach courses in Interior Design and may teach in other areas of the department that connect to the candidate’s research expertise. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct a program of creative and/or scholarly work, contribute to curriculum development and other aspects of the intellectual life of the department, and provide appropriate professional service.  Other duties as assigned.  A typical teaching load involves five courses per year. 

QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking an exceptional Interior Designer with a strong research practice and experience teaching Interior Design at the college level. A terminal degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture or Architecture is required.  Candidates should demonstrate ability to oversee curriculum development for an Interior Design concentration that lies within a Design degree.  A research practice that addresses various aspects of design and social justice is also encouraged. The job is housed within an expansive department that includes Industrial Design, Graphic Design, and various Fine Arts concentrations; Candidates should demonstrate evidence of creative work consistent with expectations for a tenure-track position at a research university. Creative practice and scholarly works are to be demonstrated through publications, awards, exhibitions, grants, and/or other peer reviewed activities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience teaching various aspects of Interior design is preferred as is experience working across disciplinary boundaries and in community engaged and/or public art settings.  Candidates who demonstrate interest in interdepartmental collaborations are preferred.

THE JAMES PEARSON DUFFY DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY:  The department offers programs leading to the following undergraduate degrees: BA in Art, BFA in Art, BFA in Design, BA in Art History and BA or BS in Fashion Design and Merchandising. The department also offers the following graduate degrees: MA in Art, MFA in Art, and MA in Art History. The department currently has 25 full-time faculty and a staff of 10 for 30+ graduate students and 550+ undergraduate students.
