Executive Director for Inclusion, Excellence, Education & Development

Under the supervision of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer, this position will be responsible for the infrastructure design and delivery of evidence-based, high-quality, and comprehensive education and professional development experiences for all university faculty, staff, and students. The Executive Director will set the strategic vision for institution-wide efforts toraise awareness, knowledge, and skills that contribute to an individual and collective engagement in behaviors, attitudes, policies, and structures that ensure enduring structural change. The successful individual for this position will have a thorough knowledge of the principles and best practices in the Inclusive Excellence framework to develop, lead, implement, and assess a diversity, equity, inclusion education and professional development plan; to formulate long and short-term programmatic goals and objectives; to delineate resources to support this effort; and, establish metrics to evaluate program success to ensure effective and efficient engagement and outcomes. The Executive Director will guide the university’s effortto move beyond access and cultural competency to developing interventions that will help yield equitable outcomes across the institution.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with institutional leadership and staff across the university who are in dedicated diversity positions, to build relationships, share resources andcreate an integrated vision and shared responsibility for advancing institutional DEI goals while fostering and affirming a campus culture of equity and inclusive excellence;
  • Advance the equity-minded principles of the Inclusive Excellence framework;
  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders, including Human Resources, Office of Institutional Equity and Office of General Counsel to build relationships and develop infrastructure that cultivates and creates a unified vision with common goals, enhanced transparency and clear accountability toward advancing institutional DEI efforts;
  • Lead the design, development, coordination, implementation, management, assessment, and oversight of our institution-wide DEI education and professional development initiatives;
  • Work with internal and external resources to design and deliver high-level, comprehensive, multimodal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) professional development training experiences for all university faculty, students and staff.
  • Conduct an institution-wide training needs assessment to identify skills or knowledge gaps that need to be addressed;
  • Identify and develop best-practice, research-based education and professional development activities;
  • Provide leadership, strategic planning, and thoughtful development of procedures and policies to ensure that professional development training opportunities are in line with equity-minded principles;
  • Support and collaborate with the key departments (e.g. Divisional Diversity & Inclusion Practitioners, Human Resources, Office of Institutional Equity, and the Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity, etc.);
  • Support and collaborate with Academic Affairs to develop and implement professional development training regarding culturally-responsive teaching and learning and high-impact instructional practices that support faculty in the development of and support of DEI inclusive teaching and learning principles;
  • Work closely with the Vice Provost of Diversity and Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer to build the internal DEI support infrastructure across the University to ensure enhanced unified efforts focused on education, outreach, strategy and understanding;
  • Maintain and enhance DEI resources (articles, books, podcasts, etc.) available to faculty, administrators, staff, and students;
  • Design and operationalize a transparent accountability framework to measure and evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the University’s DEI initiatives at every level of the institution.
  • Actively solicit and manage new funding to support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Perform all related duties as requested

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master’s degree required in a related field supporting DEI efforts in an institution of higher education.
  • 10+ years of experience creating, managing, and delivering high quality, comprehensive training and education programs in higher education.
  • At least 7 years of experience directly related to diversity and inclusion initiatives
  • Thorough knowledge regarding research and scholarship addressing research-based, equity-seeking education and professional development practice;
  • Ability to develop DEI educational and professional development programs that are innovate and reflect current and relevant research and practices in a higher education setting;
  • Ability to work with, train, and facilitate to all levels in our community, including but not limited to students, professional staff, support staff, faculty, alumni and our broader community;
  • Proven knowledge and working experience with online tools used to support education and professional development;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience in facilitation/presentation.
  • Supervisory experience;

  • Ph.D. preferred,

  • Ability to envision the future, anticipate change, capitalize on opportunities, and develop innovative options that further the strategic direction of the institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate and build consensus for a professional development training model for DEI at the University; to define the goals, accomplishments and needs both internally to the campus community and externally to a broad range of constituencies; and to continue to develop and realize a strategic plan for the initiatives to achieve that vision;
  • Capacity to work with leadership campus-wide to lead and leverage efforts on behalf of DEI; working collaboratively while insisting on progress; ability to act as a strategic thinker; and proven ability to work across a fully decentralized university;
  • A proven track record of shifting from cultural competence to equity-minded principles that lead to successful outcomes for disparate populations;
  • Demonstrated skills with collecting and using data to assess programs and increase outcomes in key indicators of success;
  • The conflict-resolution skills needed to navigate politically-charged situations to resolve problems, build consensus, and reconcile competing interests in a decentralized environment;
  • Ability to thrive in a highly fluid, fast-paced, change-oriented environment;
  • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and individually.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
