Position Overview
The Department of Curriculum & Teaching at the University of Kansas is seeking nominations and applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Secondary Education. The position’s primary focus is teaching secondary social studies education courses in the department’s teacher education campus-based undergraduate program in Lawrence, Kansas. The position will be full-time on an academic year appointment to begin August 18, 2021.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage with students and be surrounded by collaborative colleagues across the School of Education and Human Sciences, campus and education community. The Department of Curriculum & Teaching carries an atmosphere of collegiality that is supportive of an environment which is interdisciplinary, collaborative and diverse. We work together as a supportive intellectual community and seek a colleague who will enhance our organization in the following ways: 1) Demonstrate a strong commitment to calling the academy to more fully live up to its ideals regarding to access and success; 2) Support the broad public, social justice functions of the academy; and 3) Participate in the School’s commitment to public engagement and activism that better serves underserved communities of students and employees locally, statewide, and (inter)nationally.
Successful applicants will have a doctorate in Secondary Education or Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in middle/secondary social studies education or a closely related field. Applicants are encouraged to outline areas of interests in their application materials.

- Teach courses and develop curriculum in undergraduate and graduate programs including the department’s online M.S.Ed. program in Curriculum and Instruction, in-person and virtually based upon departmental need.
- Model effective instructional practices for diverse student populations and the use of instructional technology in face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning environments.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students
- Hold regular office hours
- Demonstrate sustained productivity through scholarly works/research through peer-reviewed publications, professional presentations, and external grant proposals.
- Participate in the regular academic activities of the department and School, including committee assignments and general service activities.
- Collaborating with faculty across the School of Education and Human Sciences as well as performing service to the department, School, University, regional K-12 schools, and the profession.
- Serve on and chair graduate committees

Required Qualifications
- Doctorate in Secondary Education or Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in middle/secondary social studies education, or a closely related field. If ABD, terminal degree must be achieved prior to the employment start date, by August 18, 2021.
- Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience in grades P-12.
- Demonstrated (or high potential for) teaching excellence with best-practices initiatives (including a culturally responsive pedagogy) in a university setting including the ability to develop and teach online courses.
- Demonstrated (or high potential for) research and/or scholarship areas relevant to social studies education as demonstrated through publications, awards, research grants, or presentations.
