Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Academic Transplant Hepatologist)

Summary

The Department of Medicine is seeking an Academic Transplant Hepatologist in the Transplant Institute of the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) with faculty appointments in the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Department of Medicine (primary) and Division of Abdominal Transplantation of the Department of Surgery (secondary). Academic rank commensurate with experience.

Job Duties

1. Provide professional consultative expertise in the diagnosis and management of patients with hepatobiliary diseases not requiring liver transplantation and of pre- and post-operative liver transplant patients.
2. Provide professional expertise for development, dissemination and execution of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for the care of patients with hepatobiliary diseases and for pre- and post-liver transplant patients.
3. Provide professional consultative expertise in hepatology to support the Liver Transplantation Program in the management of pre and post-operative liver transplantation patients, including evaluation, pre-operative management, peri-operative management and post-operative care).
4. Supervise the clinical activities of gastroenterology or transplant hepatology fellows, house-staff, medical students and nurse coordinators, nurse practitioners and physician assistants involved in the care of patients with hepatobiliary diseases in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
5. Maintain compliance with the policies and procedures for faculty of the BCM and BSLMC.
6. Promote quality control under guidelines developed by the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine and the Division of Abdominal Transplantation in the Department of Surgery.
7. Develop and execute research protocols involving patients, databases, and in vitro systems or experimental animal models.
8. Provide research mentorship and teaching to trainees in the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine and the Division of Abdominal Transplantation in the Department of Surgery.
9. Supervise staff and trainees involved in the conduct of multi-center clinical trials of new diagnostics and therapeutics.
10. Co-direct, supervise, present and/or participate in research seminars, GI Grand Rounds, lectures, journal clubs, hepatology teaching rounds, hepatopathology teaching rounds, and the Medical Review Board (liver transplantation patient selection committee) activities.
11. Teach the principles and practice of Hepatology and Liver Transplantation to the voluntary and full-time attending staff, medical students, house-staff, gastroenterology and transplant hepatology fellows and allied health personnel.
12. Maintain a cumulative teaching file of clinical pathological materials.
13. Participate in medical educational activities in the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Department of Medicine and the Division of Abdominal Transplantation of the Department of Surgery.
14. Design protocols, apply for research funding, and conduct clinical and/or translational or health outcomes research in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation.
15. Apply for and obtain extramural research funding for protocols as principal and co-investigator.
16. Participate in the development and execution of clinical protocols to be followed in-patients with hepatobiliary diseases and in the pre- and post-operative management of patients in the Liver Transplantation Program.
17. Participate in the prospective accumulation of data regarding all hepatology and liver transplantation patients.
18. Encourage participation of interested attending staff, medical students, fellows, house-staff, medical staff and advanced practice providers in clinical research programs.
19. Co-direct and and/or supervise clinical hepatology and liver transplant activities in outpatient clinics, the inpatient service, and clinically oriented conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Medical degree from an accredited medical school and licensed by the Texas Medical Board.
2. Board certification in Internal Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine or the equivalent of these credentials.
3. Board eligibility or certification in Gastroenterology from the American Board of Internal Medicine or the equivalent of these credentials.
4. Board eligibility or certification in Transplant Hepatology from the American Board of Internal Medicine or the equivalent of these credentials.
