Portland Community College is seeking an Instructional Support Technician (IST-IV) for the new PCC OMIC Training Center in Scappoose, Oregon. The Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC) is based on a collaborative model that brings together industry, academia, and government to foster innovation and strengthen the manufacturing industry through applied research and advanced technical training.

PCC is leading the OMIC Training Center initiative, which is developing work-based and industry-responsive training models that include pre-trades programs, State Registered Apprenticeship, short-term stackable certificates, and traditional CTE training programs in manufacturing-related trades leading to a journey card or an associate degree.

The IST-IV position is a critical member of the PCC OMIC Training Center team, responsible
for the management and safe operation of its multiple labs as well as delivery of quality student instruction. The IST-IV will prepare and maintain laboratories and classrooms; plan and design demonstrations; participate in the delivery of instruction; and provide student supervision, assistance, and evaluation.

In addition, the IST-IV will play an important role in setting up and maintaining instructional labs at the new PCC OMIC Training Center, including ordering equipment and supplies, maintaining inventories, and providing required equipment maintenance; developing protocols, processes, and procedures for the safe and efficient operation of OMIC labs; and working with industry and other OMIC partners on the procurement and set-up of equipment and technologies.

Organized and solution-oriented, a successful IST-IV must bring knowledge and experience in the advanced manufacturing trades, including welding, machining, and/or mechatronics; excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; and a strong commitment to safety and industry-recognized protocols.

The Training Center is a highly visible, highly anticipated endeavor, which will require ongoing industry engagement. The Instructional Support Technician’s ability to create and support dynamic and adaptive spaces that simulate an advanced manufacturing environment will be essential to the success of the PCC OMIC Training Center and its mission.

The position is based in Scappoose, Oregon at the new PCC OMIC Training Center.

Prepare and facilitate laboratories and classrooms for students and instructors and provide direct assistance in the use of equipment and guidance on materials needed for instruction.

Participate in the delivery of instruction, including the design and set up of demonstrations, as well as student supervision, assistance, and evaluation.

Order equipment and supplies, maintain inventories, negotiate with vendors, and research alternative suppliers. May provide required equipment maintenance.

Develop protocols, processes, and procedures to maintain general cleanliness and security, as well as for the safe and efficient operation of OMIC labs. May be required to handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials following Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and/or other regulatory agency protocols.

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrated experience working in an advanced manufacturing environment and/or education in welding, machining, or mechatronics beyond the minimum requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and professional experience with hand and power tool operation.
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating with vendors on behalf of an organization.
  • Highly organized with demonstrated experience maintaining and/or managing multiple projects or tasks.
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety and documented OSHA training.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience teaching, training, or mentoring students or employees in a trade.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in welding, machining, and/or mechatronics ( relevant experience may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis).

Three years of experience in welding, machining, and/or mechatronics are required.

Must have proven written and oral communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform. Proven ability to lead others and evaluate performance. Depending on laboratory assignment, some positions may also require specialized knowledge and program-specific certifications.

Position Grade 19 Starting Salary Expectations The first two steps of the range are: $44,556 to $45,893 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity. Position Grade Salary Range $44556 to $71497 Annual Salary FTE 1 PCC Benefits

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work pressure, disturbances of work flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills. Working conditions may be somewhat disagreeable requiring occasional exposure to safety hazards, noise and temperature extremes. Some learned physical skills are required. Physical effort such as frequent standing, walking and lifting; guiding and/or carrying of lightweight materials or equipment; occasional periods of sustained effort.
