Faculty - Assistant Professor - Painting/Drawing, 2D Design

Summary:
The Art & Design Department at Utah Valley University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in Painting/Drawing to begin August 2021. We are seeking an inclusive, visionary, and collaborative artist/educator who will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in the Painting/Drawing area with particular emphasis in 2D design. The position, under the area coordinator, serves in a responsible role in managing all sections of 2D Design courses and makes recommendations in teaching assignments and curriculum development. Must be able to teach traditional observational skills through non-objective and other contemporary approaches. Skills in teaching all undergraduate levels of drawing/mixed media, oil and acrylic painting are required. Skills in printmaking media, figure drawing/painting, and/or watercolor are desirable. Must have active exhibition record. The position also participates in mentoring students, development of curricula within the area. The candidate is expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, as well as to teaching diverse learners and modeling inclusive practices. Required Qualifications:
A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from an accredited institution appropriate to the position discipline is required. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.

- Knowledge of art history, art criticism and theory that includes a variety of perspectives
- Knowledge of principles and elements of 2D Design
- Knowledge in art studio practices relevant to Painting/Drawing area courses
- Knowledge in student management, motivation and evaluation techniques
- Skills as a practicing artist in Painting/Drawing area related media
- Skills in Painting/Drawing theory and pedagogy
- Excellent communication skills
- Skills in interpersonal relationships, problem-solving and decision-making
- Ability to relate well with students and colleagues.
- Ability to evaluate student work effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to apply appropriate technology in classroom teaching.
- Ability to teach, mentor, and motivate students in inclusive and engaging ways.
- Ability to teach courses in a variety of formats: hybrid/online/live stream/weekends/evenings


Preferred Qualifications:
One to Three years of university level teaching experience including 2D Design preferred. Evidence of active performance as an artist such as peer-reviewed exhibitions, residencies, commissions, etc. Experience teaching/working in linguistically, culturally, and economically diverse settings desirable.
