William Paterson invites applications for the 12-month full-time position of Assistant Director, Counseling, Health and Wellness.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Counseling, Health and Wellness, the Assistant Director assists in the execution of the strategic initiatives within a fully integrated counseling and primary medical care environment.

The Assistant Director, Counseling, Health and Wellness also provides administrative and clinical supervision for counseling staff and serves in a leadership role for vital administrative functions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Clinical (70%)

  • Supervising clinical professional staff and graduate practicum students to inform and ensure the clinical care of students and the development of professional skills and self-care of the clinicians.
  • Providing clinical patient care including individual, couples, group therapy, clinical consultation, risk assessments, on-call emergency coverage, and, in collaboration with consulting psychiatrist, make referrals to on-campus offices and external agencies; facilitate outreach presentations related to Counseling, Health & Wellness services via in person and telehealth platforms.
  • Executing clinical consultation services to faculty and staff; perform follow up with emergency interventions when necessary, and providing consultation to the Dean of Students regarding students of concern.
  • Facilitating referral and after-care services to ancillary providers where needed; case management and coordination of care with Health Center staff to develop comprehensive treatment
  • Providing leadership to inform crisis planning and intervention with students determined to pose imminent risk to self or others in the absence of the Associate
  • Creates and delivers outreach presentations related to Counseling, Health & Wellness services.
Administrative (30%)
  • Providing administrative coordination and strategic planning for the group counseling and outreach programs; assisting in the development of practice guidelines, department policies, and department goals; support strategies for collecting, interpreting, and reporting departmental assessment data.
  • Monitoring clinical compliance; clinical record keeping standards, HIPAA, ethical standards, NJ statutes; serve in a project management capacity for electronic medical records system
  • Providing administrative consultation rotation to the overnight/weekend On-Call Service, coordinating emergency student referrals and communication with campus police and the county Psychiatric Emergency screening service as needed.
  • Participating in the performance appraisal process for clinical staff, coaches and initiating disciplinary processes and coming to resolution of grievance matters.
  • Providing clinical supervision and training seminars as needed in the graduate training program,
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the department in the absence of the Director or Associate Director; Co-facilitating weekly Treatment and Clinical Supervision Team Meetings.
  • Representing the Student Development Division and Counseling Center on division or university- wide committees, and other campus activities/functions as assigned.
  • Performing other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.
Required qualifications:
  • PhD or PsyD in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited program.
  • Demonstrated clinical skills, leadership and managerial skills, including supervising
  • NJ Psychologist License
  • Working knowledge of electronic
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education; preferably with both traditional and non-traditional students
  • Experience providing outreach programs
  • Experience in developing and delivering presentations
  • Track record of having worked on a multi-disciplinary team
