Scope of Job:
The Department of Biology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in applied biology, broadly defined. This position is part of the Biology Department's strategy to strengthen its research efforts and extramural funding. Of chief importance are candidates whose research demonstrates a clear application to the Lower Rio Grande Valley region. Potential areas of expertise may include a focus on developmental biology, animal or plant biology, or bioinformatics. This 9-month, full-time position will combine development of an independent research program with teaching and service activities. The committee encourages applications from women and individuals from groups underrepresented in STEM faculty.
UTRGV is a leading Hispanic-serving institution with an expanding research environment, recently promoted to R2 Carnegie research classification. As such, the successful applicant will benefit from university initiatives including expanded research facilities, faculty salary incentives for external funding, and growing graduate offerings, including MS degree programs in both Biology and Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. The Lower Rio Grande Valley has several key characteristics that make it unique: it is a border region with Mexico and a hub for international culture & trade as well as food traffic, is subtropical in climate, is diverse in ecosystems and biodiversity, and yet faces public health challenges such as high incidence of diabetes. Candidates should make explicit connections of how their research may be applied to some of these unique characteristics or challenges present in the region. Potential connections to the region include, but are not limited to, tropical vector-borne diseases or other areas of public health, agriculture, sustainability, a regional branch of the USDA APHIS and ARS laboratory, or marine/gulf coast biology.
Applicants should include a cover letter describing their academic qualifications and professional experiences, and CV. The successful candidate is also expected to demonstrate a strong, extramurally fundable research program in their area of specialization. The candidate is expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to effective teaching and should be able to teach courses in developmental biology, computational biology, general biology and graduate courses; candidates may be asked to teach other courses as needed by the department and develop new courses within their area of expertise. Well qualified candidates should be able demonstrate a commitment to advancing the university, college, and program missions and to UTRGV's strategic plan (https://www.utrgv.edu/strategic-plan/).

Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience in (a) developmental biology (plant or animal study system), (b) plant science, © bioinformatics, or other related discipline.

Preferred Qualification:
A strong record of peer-reviewed publications and a clear potential for developing an externally funded research program. Commitment to student success (innovative teaching approaches and pedagogies, use of technology in the classroom, experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students) especially for students that are underrepresented in the sciences.
Demonstrated excellence in research (i.e., funding, publications).

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
