CLINICAL DIRECTOR
BREWER-PORCH CHILDREN’S CENTER

The College of Community Health Sciences (CCHS) at The University of Alabama (UA) in Tuscaloosa seeks a Clinical Director for its Brewer-Porch Children’s Center (BPCC). The Clinical Director will be appointed as Assistant or Associate Professor in the non-tenure earning clinical track in the CCHS Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. The Clinical Director will supervise clinical staff at BPCC, a psychiatric children’s treatment center based at UA, providing community-based, preventive, and residential treatment services, working with systems of care, and providing therapy services. Additionally, academic responsibilities include teaching graduate students, family medicine residents, psychiatry fellows, and medical students, and engaging in clinically based scholarly activity. The Clinical Director will supervise clinical staff at BPCC, work closely with the BPCC Medical Director, and report directly to the Chair of the CCHS Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. The Clinical Director will also work directly with state and community agencies involved in the care of youth in foster care, the juvenile system, the educational system, and the public health mental system. The BPCC Clinical Director will help the College’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine foster educational programs that prepare learners in population health principles related to the behavioral health of youth, evidence-based interventions for youth with emotional and behavioral problems, and scholarship in medical education in relevant and innovative community-based participatory research that influences population health and supports collaborating to address community health problems.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
BPCC is a psychiatric children’s center established in 1970 to provide model treatment for mentally ill children and their families. It offers both outpatient and residential treatment programs. BPCC is transitioning to a more community-based focus on prevention, evidence-based community interventions, and continuity of care for youth with serious behavioral and emotional problems. The residential services are transitioning to a more trauma-informed approach with staff, patients, and families. The Clinical Director will have a key role in these transitions and work closely with CCHS leadership to develop evidence-based programs that will include baseline assessments with outcome measures. The philosophy of care at BPCC, under the leadership of CCHS’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, is based on the understanding that the best way to address emotionally disturbed youths’ complex problems is to focus on families, prevention, systems of care and implement evidence-based community interventions to minimize the risk of institutionalization.

COLLEGE OVERVIEW:
CCHS was established at UA in 1972 in response to the Alabama Legislature’s mandate to solve the critical need for health care in rural Alabama. Since that time, the College has graduated 524 family medicine residents and has educated more than 990 clinical-years medical students. The College serves as a regional campus for the University of Alabama School of Medicine and trains 70 third- and fourth-year medical students as part of its mission. In addition to undergraduate and graduate medical education (large family medicine residency and eight fellowships), CCHS also includes University Medical Center, the Rural Health Leaders Pipeline, graduate programs, and the Institute for Rural Health Research. Tuscaloosa, with a population of approximately 100,000 is located in West Central Alabama. As the home of The University of Alabama, the 38,000-student flagship campus of the UA System, it offers exceptional educational, cultural, sports, and recreational opportunities. Located one hour from Birmingham, three hours from Atlanta, and five hours from the Gulf Coast, UA is a comprehensive research institution that offers a wide variety of opportunities for faculty and their families.
