Job Details

The Amherst College Department of Theater and Dance invites applications for a one-year visiting position at the rank of assistant professor, with a focus on Black theater and performance, beginning July 1, 2021. Over the past two decades, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst's students are Pell grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 9 percent of our students are international students. We expect the successful candidate to excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.

We seek an artist-scholar with primary expertise in Black theater and performance and familiarity with other underrepresented areas of performance. The successful candidate will also have broad knowledge of theater and dance practice, history, and theory and will demonstrate significant achievement in an area of practice (e.g., directing, devised and documentary theater, multi-disciplinary performance making, and/or performance training). We seek someone who is passionate about fostering critical dialogue in the classroom and making vital links between the practice and theory of performance and other disciplines.

Responsibilities include teaching courses in black theater and performance in the candidate's specific areas of expertise, as well as a foundational course in performance history, literature, and theory. In addition, the successful candidate may be expected to direct a significant artistic project with students. The ability to teach a foundational course in acting is highly preferred. Candidates must have a terminal degree (either an M.F.A. or a Ph.D.) in hand, or all requirements for the degree fulfilled by the start of the appointment. Professional experience as a director, performer, and/or performance-maker is also required. Review of applications will begin February 15, 2021, and continue until the position is filled. Applications received by this date will be assured full consideration.

Candidates are asked to submit an application electronically to https://apply.interfolio.com/81843. The application should include a cover letter, CV, three confidential letters of recommendation, a teaching statement, and representative examples of scholarship and artistic work.
