Job Description
A postdoctoral fellow appointment is available within the group of Eli Vlaisavljevich, Ph.D., in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech. Candidates will be considered for multiple projects that include but are not limited to the following:
1) Development of hardware and software for custom Focused Ultrasound (FUS) transducers and electronic driving systems for various ongoing histotripsy projects.
2) Investigation of histotripsy methods for the precise and non-invasive ablation liver, kidney, pancreatic, bone, and brain tumors.
3) Development of thermomechanical FUS ablation devices and novel ultrasound imaging feedback methods for the treatment of fibrous masses.
4) Development of miniaturized FUS systems for endoscopic histotripsy applications and rapid DNA extraction systems used for environmental conservation.
The candidate would work closely with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and clinicians on the development of these new FUS technologies. We are seeking motivated, creative individuals interested in working within a team environment on projects ranging from early-stage technology development to pre-clinical trials in small and large animals, including ongoing veterinary clinical trials.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. training in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, or other closely related fields. Ideal candidates will have research experience (academic or industry) in areas related to these research projects such as FUS transducer design, ultrasound physics, phased-array transducers, image-guided cancer ablation, or ultrasound neuromodulation. Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to perform experimental work, publish papers, and work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with strong programming skills (Verilog/VHDL, JavaScript, Python, Matlab, C++) and experience in circuit design, ECAD and PCB design, and digital logic are highly encouraged to apply. Candidates should be comfortable approaching challenging problems and working independently or in small interdisciplinary teams with graduate and undergraduate students.
