General Summary/Purpose:

The Clinical Research Units Float Nurse reports directly to the OPD Nurse Manager with indirect reporting to the PCRU Sr. Research Nurse. The PCRU Nurse provides skilled nursing support in the PCRU located on the Johns Hopkins east Baltimore campus Bloomberg 9N. This position will support the PCRU at 100% and at times may assist the Adult CRU. The research PCRU nurse carries out outpatient clinical procedures in keeping with approved study protocols, clinic policies, and good clinical practice (GCP). This position may also assist with training of clinical skills and protocol review. This position will provide nursing to a wide range of ages across pediatrics and adult medicine, from infants/toddlers to the elderly.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Implement standards of Good Clinical Practices in the care of research subjects.
  2. Provide study‐protocol‐directed, evidence‐based care based on the nursing process, policies, procedures, and protocols of the Johns Hopkins University and Hospital.
  3. Insert IV’s, monitor infusions, give medications, conduct patient interviews, draw blood samples, process lab samples, conduct QA/inspection of Clinic equipment, obtain vital signs.
  4. Fill out appropriate study paperwork and complete nursing documentation.
  5. Work collaboratively with faculty investigators, research nurses, study coordinators and other members of the study team to ensure the highest quality, most ethical clinical research study.
  6. Identify and advocate for quality improvement initiatives (clinical, financial, and operational) that are aligned with departmental and organizational safety and operational objectives and promote cost‐effective use of clinic resources.
  7. Attend protocol start up meetings, and be familiar with all study protocols being conducted in the clinic including study budget and utilization review.
  8. Attend unit meetings
  9. Enforce all unit, lab, safety and bedside testing policies for the unit consistent with JHH/JHU policies and procedures and adhere to all HIPAA requirements.
  10. Work under the direction of the PCRUs Sr. Research Nurse to ensure successful completion of each clinical research study and to perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Requires registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related experience strongly preferred.

  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing required.
  • Special knowledge, skills, and abilities: Strong organizational and problem‐solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with various research teams.
  • Effective interpersonal skills: must be an outgoing self-starter who can comfortably work with physicians and staff and get things done.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.


Technical qualifications or specialized certifications: Certification as a Clinical Research Professional preferred.

Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Must adhere to policies related to protecting and reporting of sensitive and confidential patient information. Must understand the importance and impact of data integrity in terms of patients, study results, costs, quality of service, and scientific research in general.
  • Requires regular contact with research participants, physicians, and other health care personnel. Requires the use of good judgment, tact, and sensitivity.
  • Requires the ability to travel between clinical locations on the East Baltimore Medical Campus and the Bayview Medical Campus.
  • Position will RARELY require off‐hour work in the evenings, nights, or weekends. These will be compensated with an hourly differential.
  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to remain standing and/or move about on feet for most of the work day.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
