General Summary/Purpose:

Reporting to Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) Director of Finance and Administration, this position leads and directs the operations of the Finance team. The position ensures JHTV’s accounting and budget teams adhere to JHU controls, policies and procedures and also provides direction and resolution regarding difficult and complex issues working closely with the Director of Finance and administration, JHTV's senior leadership and management teams. The position is also a liaison to the JHU Controller's Office, Budget Office and other University Administration and School offices as an advocate for JHTV and it disseminates information to these organizations regarding operational and strategic issues and opportunities.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Financial:

  • Works with the Director to develop and manage the annual and five-year plan operating and capital budget process with University Administration, JHTV leadership and JHTV management, recommending ways to reduce cost and enhance revenues.
  • Works with the Director on both short and long-term programmatic strategic financial planning activities including providing key information for the five year financial plans and developing forecast and financial projections based on financial strategy and resources that realistically reflect JHU’s risks and opportunities.
  • Serves as the link to central administration as well as school business offices and financial leadership to discuss the upcoming fiscal year’s budgets.
  • In absence of the Director, represents JHTV in financial related matters.
  • Monitors department budget for profitability
  • Designs and produces various reports utilizing institutional data to create monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Manages financial staff in support of report preparation.
  • Designs and produces other special reports as requested by the Director or other JHTV members
  • Develops and maintains various computerized management systems with complex spreadsheets and databases
  • Reviews monthly accounts and/or business plan activity, corrects errors, and informs the Director of any problems or discrepancies
  • Provides oversight in the development, preparation, monitoring, projections, and reconciling of department budgets
  • Develops strategies with the Director and staff for establishing and utilizing discretionary funds
  • Provides departmental information as requested by division or external entities as requested and appropriate
  • Supervises budget development of all grant and contract proposals
  • Assists with compliance matters
  • Oversees the research administration function including proposal submissions, financial management and reporting to sponsors on sponsored and non-sponsored projects while coordinating with Development and JHURA/ORA to ensure proper accounting for gifts and grants to JHTV.
  • Oversees finance staff regarding correct preparation of various forms such as journal vouchers, check deposits, special payroll (advance), check requests and other HR related financial transactions
  • Assist the Director with facilities, IT, and other issues and administrative processes
  • Allocates resources and develops efficiencies to improve and maintain the services of the division and to ensure positive financial performance

Human Resources:

  • Assists with monitoring the division’s salaries, headcount, and other key HR data
  • Serves as a key member of the JHTV’s management team, providing leadership and direction on a variety of departmental topics
  • Manages subordinate accounting staff and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Financial Operations team
  • Manages staff responsible for Inteum and SAP transactions to pay patent and office expenses, invoice licensees
  • Supervises/Trains/Leads a team of finance staff responsible for generating all accounting and month-end reporting; motivates team and provide strong leadership; hires and trains associates; plans, assigns, and directs work; executes performance management; and addresses employee relations matters in a timely fashion
  • Sets clear performance expectations, provides feedback to others, recommends training and coaching when appropriate, ensures recognition for results and takes corrective action to resolve performance problems as appropriate
  • Promotes and models a culture of exceptional customer service
  • Serves as a back-up to the Administrative Manager with coverage for JHTV division-wide HR matters and support of operations, as needed.
  • Works with divisional HR to ensure timely preparation of payroll, maintenance of other personnel information, and compliance with human resource guidelines for staff and students workers.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, or other related field.
  • Five (5) years related financial/accounting and financial management experience, e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling the monetary resources of a department, center, or unit.
  • Additional education (Master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
    • ​​​​​​​JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two (2) years of supervisory experience at JHU or elsewhere preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident required due to Federal Export Controls
  • Highly organized and detail oriented with ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities
  • Strong organizational skills, a flexible work style and be able to manage multiple challenging projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Broad knowledge of financial planning and budgeting, with presentation skills, as well as demonstrated experience managing financial and capital planning.
  • Ability to manage budgetary matters at both high oversight and detailed analysis level
  • Understanding of general accounting principles and practices.
  • Ability to analyze data to project revenues and expenditures.
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of SAP and all of its functions
  • Able to identify short and long-term problems, strengths and weaknesses of current practices, alternatives, and implementing creative solutions to address complicated issues
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgment
  • Knowledge of JHU policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of federal regulations related to sponsored funding for educational institutions (Circular A-21, A- 133, and FARS)
  • Working knowledge of electronic proposal submission systems, i.e., COEUS, NIH commons, FastLane, and Grants.gov
