The Center for Language Education (CLE) at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in JAPANESE for the 2021-2022 Academic Year.

CLE is seeking an individual who is finishing up or has recently finished his/her MA or PhD with knowledge and familiarity in the most up-to-date theory and practice of language pedagogy. Faculty in the CLE share a consistent teaching philosophy across each of the language programs, and the Center offers workshops for professional development and communication of current methodologies in language teaching. Applicants should be open to furthering his/her teaching skills and working closely with fellow CLE faculty members. At least 2 years of experience as a Teaching Assistant or Lecturer in the Japanese language is strongly desired.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate include teaching a total of 12 contact hours per week.

Minimum qualifications include:

1. M.A. or Ph.D. in linguistics and pedagogy
2. Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English
3. At least 2 years of experience (as a Teaching Assistant, etc.) in teaching Japanese as a foreign language at the university level in the U.S.
4. Strong grounding in proficiency-oriented instruction
5. Strong computer literacy (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
6. Must currently be eligible to be employed in the U.S.

4. A video demonstration of your teaching including an introduction of yourself in English and Japanese at the beginning of the video. (We do not accept DVDs by surface mail. A YouTube link address with password is acceptable.)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
