The Department of Theology at Xavier University invites applications for a non-tenure-track, yearly-renewable Teaching Professor of Christian Theology, starting in Fall 2021. Candidates must be committed to outstanding teaching in a liberal arts tradition of active learning, familiar with new technologies for teaching remotely as well as in person, and willing to provide service consistent with the mission of Jesuit, Catholic higher education.

The successful candidate will join Xavier faculty in the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts serving a diverse population of students. Xavier’s urban location in Cincinnati allows faculty to work with community partners to develop engaged learning and internship opportunities. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University 20 years in a row among the top 10 Midwest colleges and universities.

Duties include:

• Teaching multiple sections of THEO 111 (Theological Foundations), which is the foundational course in theology required of all undergraduate students;
• Service and participation in the life of the Department and University;
• A typical course load of four courses per semester.

In addition to THEO 111, there is also the possibility of occasionally teaching an upper-division elective.

The Teaching Professor position is renewable on a yearly basis, with the potential after six years for promotion to Senior Teaching Professor with a rolling two-year renewable contract.

Required qualifications:

• Ph.D. or equivalent in theology.
• Demonstrated excellence in student-centered teaching and active learning.
• Ability to interact effectively with students, colleagues, and university administrators.

Preferred qualifications: Background or specialization in one or more of the following areas:

• Mujerista theology
• Womanist theology
• Christian spiritualities
