Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Behavioural Economics and Mental



Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Behavioural Economics and Mental Health in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration (Ref.: 502777), to commence in the summer of 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at the Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.

The Department of Social Work and Social Administration, established in the 1960s, is the first social work training institute in Hong Kong’s history of professional social work education. Applicants should have a Ph.D degree by the expected start date. Preference will be given to candidates who hold or will hold a Ph.D in mental health economics, mental health policy, psychiatric epidemiology, health statistics or related field. Those with an active research agenda, an established or promising record of substantial scholarly impact in behavioural economics and mental health, the ability to teach core courses in the Department’s curriculum, and general expertise in the fields of social work and mental health are preferred. The preferred candidates are expected to show evidence or promise of high impact, funded scholarship, with an emphasis on issues relevant to mental health economics.

With this appointment, we will create the necessary critical mass to build upon our initial efforts, while expanding efforts in the Mental Wellness cluster in data science. We seek a faculty member with expertise in health economics, mental health, and big data analytics, who has:

  • an established or promising track record of research with substantial focus and impact in the area of mental health economics and social data science (e.g., big data analytics, advanced statistics, use of health care administrative data);
  • an understanding of social work issues in mental health that informs teaching and research;
  • a track record (or promise) of effective teaching in a research-intensive professional department;


A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
