The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant or untenured Associate Professor level.  Applications are particularly invited from candidates whose research interests fall in the areas of (1) robotics and autonomous systems and/or (2) aerospace engineering.  Examples include -- but are not limited to -- robotics, autonomous vehicles and systems, cyber-physical systems, control theory and optimization, machine learning and artificial intelligence, energy efficient propulsion and aircraft systems, computational fluid dynamics, and other allied autonomy and aerospace disciplines. Applicants for the position must have a demonstrated record of excellence in, and show exceptional promise for, high-quality research, teaching, and professional development. Duke encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as entrepreneurial activities, which serve to broaden the societal impact of our research and teaching.  Diversity, equity, and belonging are integral to our mission, and we strongly encourage candidates from under-represented groups to apply.  In addition, applicants must have a demonstrated record of interest in and commitment to the mentorship of students from underrepresented and underserved populations.

By the time of hiring, candidates are expected to have been awarded a doctoral degree in a quantitative field. Once hired, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to obtain competitive external funding, to establish a vibrant research program, and to contribute through service to the welfare of the department and to the promotion of their discipline. We seek faculty members committed to building a diverse and inclusive community that fosters excellence in research and teaching.

Applicants should submit their application material electronically through AcademicJobsOnline https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/17743. Review of applications will start immediately, and applications received before January 1st, 2021 will receive full consideration. Applications will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. We expect to hire for the Fall 2021 semester. Questions regarding this search should be directed to Michael Zavlanos at michael.zavlanos@duke.edu.
