Coordinator / Learning Disabilities Specialist, Disability Services & Programs for Students

Full-Time Tenure Track

Salary:$66,739.62 - $76,790.82 Annually

This is a full-time (11-month, 199 days) tenure-track faculty position for a DSPS Coordinator/Learning Disability Specialist. The assignment primarily includes teaching special classes for students with learning disabilities and head trauma, diagnostic testing, advising students as to their learning needs and appropriate learning strategies, and coordination duties for DSPS.  This position is a categorically-funded position.

Education and Experience:

• Applicant must meet one of both Parts A and B below:

PART A: (DSPS Coordinator Requirements):

Possession of a Master’s Degree AND one year of formal training or leadership experience reasonably related to the assignment AND have two years full-time experience or equivalent within the last four years in one or more of the following:

1. Instruction or counseling in a higher education program for students with disabilities OR

2. Administration of a program for students with disabilities in an institution of higher education OR

3. Teaching, counseling, or administration in secondary education working predominantly or exclusively in programs for students with disabilities; OR

4. Administrative or supervisory experience in industry, government, public agencies, the military, or private social welfare organizations in which responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively related to persons with disabilities.

PART B: (LD Specialist Requirements):

Possession of a Master’s Degree in Learning Disabilities, Special Education, Education, Psychology, Speech Language Pathology, Communication Disorders, Educational or School Psychology, Counseling, or Rehabilitation Counseling AND  fifteen (15) semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities, to include, but not limited to adult cognitive and achievement assessment or the equivalent.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Experience in administering and interpreting the WJ-R and the WAIS-R.

• Experience in diagnosing learning disabilities and communicating diagnostic information that helps students maximize their learning strengths.

• Knowledge of technologies to aid students with learning disabilities.

• Experience in training and supervising employees.

• Prior teaching experience.

• Experience in working with under-prepared and at-risk students.

• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse, academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move to various campus and community locations.  Requires hand-eye-arm coordination to use a personal computer keyboard.  Requires sufficient visual acuity to recognize words and numbers. Sufficient auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone and make presentations to large audiences.

Duties:

• Advise students concerning learning disabilities assessment procedures, learning disabilities testing results, and recommended services.

• Provide diagnostic and verification of learning disabilities by administering and/or interpreting either the Woodcock-Johnson Battery-Revised and/or the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised assessments or equivalent.

• Teach special classes for students with learning disabilities and head trauma.

• Oversee and train instructional assistants in small group and individualized instruction.

• Meet individually with students to discuss their diagnostic testing, learning styles, accommodations, and academic needs.

• Maintain accurate attendance, scholastic, state, and federal records.

• Serve as an advocate/ liaison between students and faculty when appropriate.

• Maintain appropriate student files.

• Collaborate with college instructors, counselors, and staff to assist eligible students in pursuit of their educational goals.

• Participate in professional activities, curriculum development, and campus committees as requested by the District.

• Coordinate the day-to-day functions of DSPS.

• Coordinate the collection of pertinent data related to the retention, matriculation, and transfer of DSPS students.

• Coordinate with other campus resources, such as EOPS, CalWORKs, Financial Aid, Learning Center, and Career/Transfer Center.

• Maintain liaison with other on- and off-campus agencies providing support services to students with disabilities.

• Perform other related duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

• May require work, coordination, or instruction in a prison environment.
