Director of Capstone Design and Teaching Faculty

The Opportunity: 

The Division of Engineering, Design, and Society (EDS) at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for a non-tenure-track Teaching Faculty position focused on design education, with a primary assignment of directing the Mines Capstone Senior Design Program (https://capstone.mines.edu/).  Applicants qualified for appointment at the ranks of Teaching Associate Professor or Teaching Full Professor will be considered; applicants must indicate the rank to which they are applying. We especially seek candidates excited to share the EDS mission and vision articulated on our website at https://eds.mines.edu/ and are looking for an outstanding engineering educator who is passionate about design and how it can inspire students to make a difference in the world.

Capstone Design is an interdisciplinary collaboration between four departments at Mines, representing five degree programs (EDS, plus mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and civil and environmental engineering). The program currently provides a six-credit, two-semester, client-based, multi-disciplinary team experience for approximately 500 senior engineering students yearly, approximately half of Mines’ annual graduating class. The leadership team includes representatives from each department, together with the director and a stakeholder relations manager who spearheads outreach. The director coordinates the leadership team to ensure the smooth operation of the program and to identify a suitable number and quality of client-sponsored projects.

Responsibilities: 

The successful candidate will serve as director of Mines Capstone Senior Design Program and will also be expected to contribute to teaching, service, and academic program development activities. In particular, they will be expected to be a leader in bringing knowledge of best practices in design education to the institution (where “design” means more than “engineering design”). They will also be expected to work effectively in the collegial, collaborative, and interdisciplinary environment that exists in EDS and across the Mines campus. Finally, the successful candidate will not only oversee the program curriculum and its implementation with the leadership team, but will also have responsibility for program financial planning, budgeting, a budget management.
