The Department of Neurology is seeking aResearch Specialist IIto support the Neuromuscular Fly Lab exploring Drosophila melanogaster that occur in Neurological Diseases including neuropathies and neurodegenerative diseases.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Research Specialist II will develop assays and protocol for PI approval and design experimental approaches for research projects. The job includes performing a range of sophisticated assays.
  • The Research Specialist II will make significant contributions to various aspects of research efforts that may include trouble shooting, independent decisions and training/guidance of other lab personnel.
  • Responsible for assigned daily duties and responsibilities on a regular and continuous basis.
  • Utilize specialized knowledge to interpret results, reading control, evaluate results.
  • Order equipment and supplies interface with vendors. Scientifically contribute to writing manuscripts and grants, process and analyze data into figures for scientific publications.
  • Guide and facilitate problem solving for new and members and make scientific contribution to efficiency and productivity. Collaborate in development of new techniques and instruments.
  • Research Specialist II will use scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgements and decisions.
  • Will assist the post docs by performing routine molecular biology experiments and setting crosses of different fly stains. Will understand general laboratory maintenance under Biosafety levels 1, 2 and 3.
  • Perform and monitor routine tasks including glassware washing, making common reagents such as LB Broth, LB Plates, and autoclaving items, maintaining fly stocks and ordering supplies.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree, in biology, chemistry, or other related discipline. Requires a minimum of 2 years’ laboratory experience performing relevant techniques in a comparable setting required. Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:Master’s Degree in Biology

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical/laboratory environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
