Under general supervision teaches undergraduate Applied, Band and/or other music courses in the Department of Music at Texas Southern University. Organizes, schedules, and directs all assigned band activities/performances and travel; oversees area budget; recruit students.

Essential Duties Summary

• Teaches courses in the Music Department.
• Submits student progress reports, midterm grades, attendance reports, and final grades on time.
• Collects and reports data required for the Music Department Assessment and Strategic Plan.
• Attends required/mandatory university, college, and departmental meetings.
• Functions as an important part of the Music Department team through delivery of a set curriculum, identifying at-risk students and campus resources to address barriers to student success, and exercising compliance with university, college, and departmental policies.
• Coordinates marching band performances at on and off-campus activities and events.
• Student recruitment.
• Fundraising.
• Supervision of marching band staff.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
• Cost-effective programming techniques/practices to ensure funds are managed wisely.
• Successful fundraising activities.
• Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications.

Skill in:
• Developing and implementing plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
• Planning and using appropriate instructional and learning pedagogy, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
• Conducting ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
• Creating an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
• Applying and enforcing student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
• Accompanying and supervising students on out-of-town trips.
• Taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Demonstrated ability to develop budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
• Successful inventory management to ensure security of all fixed assets within department.
• Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment.

Ability to:
• Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band director(s).
• Build a team and foster effective leadership.
• Contribute to and enhance the instructional and curricular practices.
• Work one-on-one with students to guide music performance mastery.
• Work with a diverse student and faculty population.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Work Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of university/college-level teaching, and marching band oversight.

Preferred:

• Individual should be a strong leader in music and the marching arts with excellent skills in conducting, marching, choreography, and performance.
• Experience with HBCU marching band culture.
• Experience composing, arranging music, creating marching drills and creating successful performances and showcases.
• Experience working with industry-standard music technology.
• Demonstrated success in recruitment, retention and graduation for marching band students.
• Experience in budget management as well as seeking and securing funds for the development of program.
• Demonstrated experience collaborating with various community stakeholders.
• Demonstrated experience building structure and professionalism within marching program.
• Plan performance schedule, select music, rehearse and train musicians, lead performances.
• Developing strong relationships with TSU Ocean of Soul Alumni.
• Develop strong rapport with students and promote positive and professional learning environment.

Working/Environmental Conditions

Greater than 50% travel during the academic year as needed to achieve Marching Band goals.
Prolonged standing and/or walking.
Using or carrying equipment.
