Job Summary

The Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University seeks an exceptional Director of Jazz Studies (Assistant or Associate Professor of Music in Jazz Studies). This is a tenure track, full-time position to begin August 2021.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include: leading the Jazz Studies program at CSU, including advising for the jazz minor: teach courses in Jazz Improvisation and Theory (four-course sequence), Jazz History, and Jazz Literature and Appreciation. Other courses may be assigned as appropriate and according to the needs of the school. Additional responsibilities include directing the Schwob Jazz Orchestra; coordinating small jazz ensembles; building professional relationships with local, regional, and national jazz institutions; maintain ongoing professional development in creative and/or scholarly activities; assist in the recruitment of highly qualified music majors; and participate in department, university, and professional service.

Required Qualifications

Key qualifications include a demonstrated potential to lead a college jazz program of distinction; significant experience in performance and show potential for scholarly contributions to the field of jazz studies; and a record of success as a teacher.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with a completed doctorate in music. Applicants who are ABD will be considered; and significant and sustained professional distinction in lieu of a degree will also be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching at the college level. Preference may be given to candidates with professional performance experience.
