Job Description:

The School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to join the English faculty in Fall 2021. Dean College invites applications for this full-time, 10-month, annually renewed Assistant/Associate Professor position.

We seek an accomplished educator with experience teaching first-year writing courses and upper-division English courses. This faculty member will help support the English major as well as the college wide writing program. The candidate should have experience teaching students from a wide array of writing backgrounds, focus on experiential learning, and employ active engagement in their classroom. Expertise in the areas of Postcolonial Literature, African Diaspora Studies, World Literature and/or Intersectionality is a plus.

Position details:

  • Teach a 5:5 teaching load;
  • There is no faculty advising load. Students are served by a professional advising staff;
  • Develop curriculum grounded in best practices and assess the results of program initiatives;
  • Hold office hours as required and meet with students by appointment;
  • Coach and mentor students regarding academic and career goals, including graduate school preparation;
  • Participate in committees as assigned, attend school and program meetings;
  • Participate in recruitment activities and student orientations;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • A Master's degree in English or related discipline is required;
  • A PhD in English is desired; candidates with an ABD will be considered;
  • Undergraduate teaching experience is required, particularly with first-year undergraduates;
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate best practices in first-year writing instruction;
  • The successful candidate will possess expertise in learner-centered teaching and will have the ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles and at varying stages of academic readiness;
  • A commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds;
  • Strong computer skills, the use of technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy, the ability to access the College's online resources, and a willingness to be responsive to students via digital tools, including our digital learning management system;
  • Experience with online teaching, course management systems, digital technology, and classroom media such as smart boards is desired.
