We seek an applicant who has an active exhibition record, a strong commitment to teaching, and is capable of building an innovative undergraduate sculpture curriculum. An ideal candidate would be proficient in a broad range of sculptural processes, and knowledgeable in contemporary and historical issues related to 3D media and the expanded field of sculpture.

    Job Description:
This professor will teach a 3:2 load, and assume responsibility for foundation and upper level 3D courses (including, but not limited to ceramics) with the potential to develop additional courses within the department and with interdisciplinary partners across campus, including Study Away and MayX. A successful candidate should be prepared to teach a First Year Writing seminar. Responsibilities also include guiding senior projects and overseeing the sculpture facility. All faculty are expected to provide mentorship opportunities and high-impact learning experiences in line with The Furman Advantage.

Furman University is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of university life, and strives to create an anti-racist community through excellence in teaching, mentorship, and programming. Numerous initiatives and programs are underway or planned to promote these ideals, including: historic projects, dialogue initiatives, the Center for Inclusive Communities, and a proposed major in Africana Studies. The Art department seeks a colleague who can amplify our current efforts to create more inclusive coursework, curriculum, and community engagement, to broaden the canon of artists to which our students are exposed and help them to understand how this diversity is important to a meaningful artistic practice. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and be committed to assisting the university in its continuing efforts to become a model of inclusive excellence.

Tenure-track faculty are expected to teach, advise and maintain significant creative output, producing high quality work that is exhibited in regional, national, and/or international venues. Tenure-track faculty are also expected to participate in meaningful service on the department and university level towards our strategic goals and priorities, including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and/or Sustainability. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, sitting on university-wide committees and facilitating meaningful community engagement. With small class sizes and support for undergraduate research, the ideal candidate is excited to mentor students interested in the arts and humanities. Furman is supportive of faculty research and the candidate will be eligible for research and professional development funds.

Our department focuses on developing students with technical proficiency in studio art and art history, but also stresses an interdisciplinary approach to viewing and making art that emphasizes critical thinking and writing. We seek a candidate who can critique student work in a wide range of media and deliver studio art content to a broad community across the University's curriculum.
