The Northern Social Work site is a University of Manitoba ACCESS Program designed for mature undergraduate students who face significant social, academic and financial barriers. The Program is located in Thompson, Manitoba, a city of 13,000 located in the northern part of the province. Thompson has many outdoor recreational opportunities and good road and air access to Winnipeg and other parts of the country (www.thompson.ca).  The city is called the “Hub of the North” and is a centre for health, educational, and government services for Northern Manitoba.

The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. The Thompson site is located on Treaty 5 land, the traditional territory of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation.  Creating Pathways to Indigenous Achievement is a key priority for the University, as identified in its current strategic plan.  The U of M is home to a vibrant Indigenous community, including more than 2,600 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, one of the largest Indigenous student populations in the country. Honoured to be chosen as host of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the U of M is dedicated to advancing Indigenous research and scholarship, and to becoming a centre of excellence for this work.
