Job Duties:
Teaching (40%)
Typical teaching expectation for Architecture faculty is: two 6-credit Architectural Design studios, and one 3-credit lecture or seminar per year. Meet department expectation in terms of student advising.

Research (40%)
Conduct research, creative, and/or professional work that focuses on issues of Urban Design. Disseminate this work through peer-reviewed publications, and conferences. Seek external support for R/C/P work.

Service (20%)
Serve the Department, University, State, and the Profession (primarily on committees, and boards

A Professional Degree in Architecture. (NAAB accredited or equivalent)

Demonstrated record of Research. Creative, and/or Professional Work that demonstrates expertise in Architectural, and Urban Design.

PhD* in Architecture with an Urban Design Emphasis or in Urban Design OR a Professional Licensure in Architecture* (NCARB approved for U.S. jurisdiction or equivalent) plus a Post-Professional graduate degree in Architecture or Urban Design

Required Qualifications (for Associate Professor Candidates only):

Established record of teaching that is consistent with the department’s standards for promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of Architecture.

Established record of Research/Creative/Professional work that is consistent with the department’s standard for promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of Architecture.

Position Overview

The School of Architecture & Design at the University of Kansas invites applications for a tenure/tenure-track position of Assistant, or Associate Professor of Architecture with an emphasis in Urban Design beginning in the fall of 2021. The Architecture Department faculty’s core purpose is to prepare new practitioners in the design of the built environment, and for the path to Architectural licensure. It seeks ways by which humanity can inhabit this planet in a sustainably healthy way. It does so primarily through its NAAB accredited MArch program, and its soon to be accredited Interior Architecture program.

In order to serve this purpose, the Architecture faculty is committed to understanding the built environment at all scales. We engage in developing cross-disciplinary research and academic initiatives that bear on reshaping global urban environments. We demonstrate excellence in the application of design skills and digital technologies to the built environment. We promote and reflect upon some the most pressing socio-spatial challenges of our time including climate change and the environmental impacts of urbanization, transformation in the nature of work, increasing economic and social inequality, global and local patterns of displacement, etc. We develop and apply scholarly knowledge in urban design as it addresses global scale challenges, and urban design and planning challenges facing our State, and region (particularly the Kansas City metropolitan area). We are committed to excellence in applying our knowledge and experience in our educating the next generation of architects. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to its core purpose as described above.

In addition to the MArch and IA degrees, the Architecture Department also offers a BA in Architectural Studies, MA in Architecture, a PhD, and multiple certificate programs. It has urban design studios in Kansas City, as well as summer, semester, and year-long foreign study programs around the globe. In addition to our Health and Wellness Design Institute and the School's Center for Design Research, the Architecture Department has recognized areas of expertise in: Design-Build, Sports and Entertainment, Interior Architecture, Public Interest Design, Historic Preservation, Sustainable Design, and Smart Cities.
