Title:  Dance Faculty

Department/Location:  Theatre and Dance

Organizational Relationships:  Reports to Department Chair, Division Head, Dean of Academics

Summary:  Part-time Dance faculty that teaches from the viewpoint of the liberal arts for the purpose of inspiring an artistic understanding of, and appreciation for, the performing arts.  Responsibilities may include: teaching various technique classes (Ballet, Modern, Jazz and/or Tap), supporting annual Dance Production, teaching an additional required course for Dance and Theatre minors/Theatre majors/potential Individualized Dance Majors, and promoting Christian Science-based character education in accord with Principia’s mission as outlined in Education at The Principia.

Work Performed - Essential Duties:

  • Teaches minimum of 2 technique classes per semester (equivalent to 3 SH)
  • Teaches minimum of 1 (3SH) academic class per semester (e.g. Theatre Movement, Dance History, Dance Composition)
  • Choreographs 1 piece for annual Dance Production (equivalent to 3 SH class)
  • Participates in and provides support for some departmental responsibilities and activities, including assessment
  • Is an active character educator in accordance with Principia’s mission
  • Supports metaphysically the mission and goals of the institution and its operations
  • Maintains office hours
  • Teaches courses within the context of Principia's philosophy of liberal arts education

Additional Duties:

  • Supports general education PE program through teaching of dance classes
  • Works closely with students to further develop their thinking, writing, research, movement, and communication skills

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A. required; MFA degree in Dance preferred
  • Significant dance experience, preferably at the professional level
  • Professional tested experience will be considered in place of degrees
  • Willingness and ability to work with students at all skill levels
  • Interdisciplinary outlook and willingness to work with colleagues in different disciplines
  • Active (or pending) membership in The First Church of Christ Scientist, and/or local Journal-listed branch church or society of The First Church of Christ, Scientist
  • Christian Science class instruction preferred but not required
