Primary Function:

The Department of Communication at Georgia College offers an integrated, cross-platform curriculum including informative, persuasive, and hybrid mass communication courses with the goal of producing graduates with a broad knowledge of the media and its wide variety of channels. Community engagement, particularly through service learning in the classroom, is emphasized in the department. The department has almost 350 majors and oversees a PRSSA chapter, a student newspaper, a student-operated radio station, and a weekly student cable news program. A research lab furnished as living room and equipped with eye tracking instrumentation as well as a focus group setup is also a part of the department.

Primary Purpose:

The primary role of this tenure track assistant professor will be in strategic communication with an emphasis in either public relations or advertising. Primary teaching responsibilities in strategic communication will be in writing, management, and campaigns courses. Other teaching responsibilities may include introductory mass communication. The position will also contribute to the university core curriculum.

Teaching Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach courses in strategic communication including writing, management, and campaigns, and some introductory mass communication courses. The position will also contribute to the university core curriculum.

Teaching Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Regular course meetings and instruction as defined in the position description,
  • Mentoring students, and
  • Guiding undergraduates in research.

Additionally, the department serves the core curriculum by teaching the first-year writing courses, numerous first and second year seminars (GC1Y and GC2Y), and contributing expertise in other areas.

Faculty are expected to conduct research and develop within their profession. Examples of such expectations include, but are not limited to

  • attendance at professional training and development workshops on and off campus,
  • grant writing, and
  • membership and participation in professional organizations.

Examples of research possibilities include

  • publication and peer reviewed scholarship,
  • presentations at professional meetings, and
  • membership and participation in professional organizations

Service is an essential responsibility of all faculty in the Department of Communication. Service is fulfilled through departmental, college, and university participation.

Service is fulfilled through activities such as

  • participation in departmental, college, and university committees and programs,
  • directing and advising programs, and
  • participation in special programs or projects.

Public Service is often a part of faculty service expectations and might include activities such as the following:

  • community outreach and engagement,
  • mentoring students participating in community engagement,
  • service to the profession, and
  • membership and participation in community organizations where disciplinary or faculty expertise is essential.

Minimum Requirements:

PhD in mass communication or related field is required. ABD may be considered if degree is completed and conferred within the first year of employment
