JOB DESCRIPTION

The University of Indianapolis seeks applications for Dean of the Shaheen College of Arts and Sciences (SCAS). This full-time, 12-month administrator provides overall budgetary, curricular, and personnel leadership and direction to the Shaheen College of Arts and Sciences in accordance with the mission and strategic plan of the University of Indianapolis. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean represents the College on the Provost’s Council. Academic rank and credit toward tenure will be negotiated based on academic experience. Application review begins February 1, 2021. The position will begin in July of 2021, though the start date can be negotiated for the ideal candidate.

The Shaheen College of Arts and Sciences is comprised of undergraduate and graduate programs in seventeen departments encompassing the Fine Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the R.B. Annis School of Engineering. The Shaheen College dean's office also consists of an associate dean, an assistant dean and two administrative assistants.

Responsibilities include managing and overseeing unit resources including annual budget, faculty load, facilities, and support staff; supporting and promoting diversity and inclusion within the college; encouraging and supporting faculty development, including initiatives related to faculty scholarship and community engagement; leading school initiatives related to student learning, general education offerings, innovative pedagogical practices, new curricular options, and outcomes assessment and accreditation for all academic programs in the Shaheen College; serving as the official representative of, and spokesperson for the College; supervising the hiring and performance reviews of all personnel in the College; supervising, conducting and fostering scholarly work; seeking opportunities for and overseeing Shaheen College faculty efforts in securing external funding; collaborating with the University Advancement team in donor cultivation and solicitation as needed; and engaging in strategic planning for the College and the broader University community.

Minimum qualifications: An earned terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education; a record of successful teaching, scholarship, and professional engagement to merit senior rank in a discipline within the Shaheen College; ability to develop and maintain a college budget, including entrepreneurial and innovative approaches to financing; demonstrated success in administrative and/or academic leadership; demonstrated success in planning and execution of projects/curriculum that leverage resources and personnel in creative, forward-thinking ways; personal and professional integrity; ability to engage various constituent groups in strategic initiatives; a demonstrated commitment to and/or evidence of successful initiatives that are inclusive; a record of success that would warrant a senior rank with tenure; ability to articulate the purpose and value of a liberal arts education and its role in professional programs; and strong organizational and communication skills.

Preferred qualifications: Experience with academic program development and curriculum management; knowledge of assessment and accreditation practices; experience in leadership at the chair’s level or higher; ability to represent the concerns of the College to internal and external audiences; ability to secure grants and engage in other fundraising activities; and ability to cultivate and maintain ties with alumni.
