General Summary/Purpose:

Seeking anexperienced and highly skilled speech language pathologist to provide speech language therapy to a low-verbal young adult with Autism Level-3 on a part-time basis. The position is based at the midtown Manhattan office of the Johns Hopkins New York Educational Program (NYEP). The program is part of the Division of Cognitive Neurology/Neuropsychology of the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins.

The NYEP’s primary goal is to provide full-time educational services to this young man. The NYEP has been successful in teaching this initially nonverbal individual oral speech (cf. Pickett et al., 2009). The goal of this position is to help the team further advance speech and language efforts. The successful candidate will design, implement, and direct others on strategies to enhance the articulatory capabilities of the individual and other elements required for successful vocal communication (e.g., pragmatics, vocabulary, elementary syntax). Extensive ongoing data collection (audio/video recording) will potentially allow testing of the efficacy of any such strategies. The successful candidate would be expected to work in close collaboration primarily with the NYEP Educational Director, who is a CCC-SLP, with the NYEP Program Director, and with the Division Director.

Besides its primary purpose, the NYEP also offers select educational/social services to other young adults with developmental disabilities. In addition, research aimed at improving the speech, language, cognitive control, and other functions of such individuals is also conducted at this location.

The NYEP offices are located near Grand Central Station; the educational efforts are also conducted at two other sites on New York’s Upper East Side.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

It is expected that the successful candidate will:

  • Develop and implement speech/language goals and objectives in collaboration with the Educational Director and others.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Educational Director to discuss and assess current interventions, techniques and assessments and make needed adjustments to reach specific speech-related goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate with the Educational Director to develop valid ways to track speech production progress.
  • Co-treat with the Educational Director during speech and language therapy sessions.
  • Observe and provide support services to help the Program’s teachers reinforce speech and language goals and promote generalization during curriculum sessions on activities of daily living, leisure skills, etc.
  • Travel as needed with the young adult or provide therapy to the young adult at various locations, including family homes, in the New York and Connecticut area.
  • Keep informed about current literature, research, and instructional strategies in speech-language therapy and share the information with NYEP staff.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • A master’s degree (or the equivalent)from an accredited speech-language pathology program and be licensed as a Speech and Language Pathologist in the State of New York.
  • The candidate must hold anASHACertificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).
  • Minimum of five years of experience working with individuals with ASD (including non-verbal/minimally verbal ASD-3 individuals) using a variety of techniques and interventions to expand and improve speech and language deficits.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates who are PhD-levelspeech and language pathologists with experience in research studies and designs related to communication disorders in neurologically impaired populations and have demonstrated proficiency in research documentation and report preparation are preferred.

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

  • Ability to travel within New York City, using public transportation, to various work and educational settings throughout the day.
  • Ability to lift and carry weights up to 10 lbs for short walking distances and/or using public transportation or taxicabs.
  • Ability to stand, for observations, up to 45 minutes.
  • Ability to perform observations in the community, while walking with the subject(s) and instructor(s).

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
