Job Summary

Johnson County Community College, a League of Innovation school, is searching for a full-time, Assistant Professor to join the Graphic Design program. This well-established and recognized program is located in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area and prepares (its) students for significant careers in Graphic Design.

The ideal candidate will have both professional graphic design and teaching experience, with proven competence employing and teaching the myriad of tools, technologies and methods common in contemporary design practice.

This position requires a faculty member interested and capable of instructing students at all levels within its AAS degree program and who can embrace and participate in advancing the program’s vison—equipping its graduates for successful careers. An understanding of contemporary design practice, pedagogy, innovation and a desire to collaborate are also required.

Along with a current digital professional portfolio and a relevant teaching portfolio, selected candidates will participate in a video interview. Those selected make a teaching presentation as part of the interview process.

A Successful Candidate will:

• Teach three courses each semester within the Graphic Design sequence of catalog courses.

• Perform other duties expected of full-time faculty; including maintaining scheduled office hours, student advising and recruiting; developing and revising curriculum, developing and implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes, participating in college, division, and department meetings, serving on committees and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments may be day, evening, weekend, and are subject to change as needed.

• Establish and maintain collaborative partnerships with a wide variety of academic departments on campus.

• Establish partnerships with local, regional and the national graphic design associations, educational and industry partners.

• Demonstrates a strong teaching ability.

• Is comfortable adopting and integrating new technologies into the classroom and into the coursework.

• Demonstrates knowledge of and commitment to the teaching mission of a comprehensive community college.

• Embraces collaboration with faculty and students from other disciplines, as well as people from the community.

• Has a strong understanding of the changing landscape of Higher Education.

• Has a commitment and concern for global perspectives, the diversity efforts of the department, division, and college.

Required Qualifications

-Bachelor degree (BA or BFA) in Design/Illustration with 5+ years of teaching as an Adjunct/Full-time in a career/professional graphic design program comparable to that of JCCC Graphic Design Program AND 5+ years directly-related professional experience in the design industry
- College-level teaching experience in the graphic design discipline.
-Knowledge of design principles and composition and their application to graphic design concepts.
-Traditional and current drawing/illustration skills that support a professional graphic design experience by the application of drawing methods, visual language, and conceptual ideation to solving visual problems.
-Ability to teach and demonstrate a range of drawing systems as it applies to design drawing, conceptualization and presentation of form.
-Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills in order to deal effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, governmental agencies, community and business representatives, professional associations, and the public.
-Commitment to advancing the design discipline through the innovative use of evolving technologies, traditional and new media.

Preferred Qualifications

-Master's degree (MFA, MDES or MA) in Design/Illustration with 5+ years of teaching as a TA/Adjunct/Full-time in a career/professional graphic design program comparable to that of JCCC Graphic Design Program AND 3+ directly-related professional experience in the design industry.
-Ability to utilize traditional and evolving technologies that support the creative process and the industry such as story-telling, motion graphics; interactive media, user-experience design, prototyping/development.
-Creates and contributes to in-class and out-of-class educational experiences such as field trips, tours, lectures, fund-raising, award presentations for program majors.
-Demonstrates organizational, administrative, and collaborative leadership abilities.
-Proven commitment to student assessment and student success.
