The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Equipped with the most technologically advanced facilities located on a university campus, the college is dedicated to safeguarding public health by studying emerging infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.

Position Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine (www.vet.uga.edu) at the University of Georgia invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, academic position as Associate Dean for Research, Faculty and Graduate Affairs and Director of the Veterinary Medical Experiment Station from within the UGA community. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean and provides leadership and oversight for the extramural and intramural research programs of the College, mentors faculty on research career issues, promotes research development by working with faculty to enhance research funding, and serves as College liaison with the University of Georgia Research Foundation and the Office of the Vice President for Research.

The Associate Dean serves as the Director of the Veterinary Medical Experiment Station, which is a state-funded budgetary entity with the mission to conduct research and provide scientific training focused on the improvement of animal and human health.

The Associate Dean is the responsible administrator for the College’s Animal Health Research Center, and research administrative responsibilities involve managing and coordinating College research resources and setting animal health research priorities.

The Associate Dean provides leadership and oversight to issues and initiatives related to faculty affairs, including hiring; diversity, equity and inclusion issues; career development (including advancement, promotion and/or tenure); conflict management; and other faculty-centered issues.

The Associate Dean administers and promotes graduate education in the College through the oversight and facilitation of graduate faculty appointments, curricular revision and development, and graduate student career development programming.

Additional Requirements

A PhD (or equivalent) and/or a DVM (or equivalent) and evidence of an extensive research background in their field.

Candidates should be a current faculty member in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Current CVM faculty that are eligible for appointment at either of these ranks will also be considered. Candidates currently at that rank of Associate Professor must either be currently up for promotion to Professor or eligible to submit their application for promotion during Spring 2021.

Candidates should also currently be tenured at the University of Georgia or eligible to be approved for tenure upon appointment (must have been tenured at a prior institution and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution).

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Five years of academic leadership and administrative experience, including management of faculty, staff, and facilities as well as oversight of a complex budget.

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills; a background that includes strategic planning, performance evaluation, and policy development; familiarity with federal grant finance and compliance issues.

The successful candidate should have a record of success in obtaining extramural funds and mentoring graduate students. Candidates also must show clear and convincing evidence of high levels of academic and administrative attainment, as appropriate for the position’s duties, and have a record of commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in an academic environment. Candidates must also demonstrate national or international recognition in their field.
